Famous commentator Peter Drury will take over the role Martin Tyler left behind next season as Sky Sports' choice for the biggest games in Super Sunday coverage.
The Telegraph Sport reported on Saturday that Tyler was due to leave Sky Sports after 33 years as the Premier League's voice to domestic audiences, and it will be Drury, 55, who will become the broadcaster's newest subscriber this summer. Drury joined US network NBC Sports early last season and will continue to work for NBC, which, like Sky Sports, is owned by US media giant Comcast.
Drury will commentate on the news most weekends. Saturday game for NBC Sports, which holds the rights to live coverage of all U.S. Premier League games through 2028. It will then take part in the main game of Super Sunday for Sky Sports, although there may occasionally be a switch depending on the priorities of the two broadcasters.
Drury is one of the most popular Premier League commentators in the world, known worldwide for his unusual analogies, wordplay and unusual turn of phrase. He was the voice of the Premier League's domestic channel, which is part of the rights packages acquired by the broadcasters. He has also commentated for the Champions League for BT Sport and most recently for US broadcaster CBS.
In a statement to Telegraph Sport, Drury said: “I am thrilled to be joining Sky's outstanding cast of commentators. Working on the best games, week after week, with a broadcaster that has told the history of the Premier League from the beginning, is an opportunity for my career and I can't wait to get started.»
Drury commented on the international feed FIFA broadcast by broadcasters around the world. Just as Tyler voiced the popular video game EA Sports Fifa, Drury played a similar role in Pro Evolution Soccer, a game created by Japanese tech giant Konami.
In addition to Drury, Sky Sports has an experienced commentary team that includes Rob Hawthorne, Bill Leslie, Seb Hutchinson, Dan Mann, Gary Weaver and Ian Crocker. Gary Hughes, director of football at Sky Sports, said: “We look forward to meeting Peter Drury at Sky Sports. Peter is one of the game's most poetic commentators and will bring tremendous energy and enthusiasm, as well as his award-winning broadcast experience, to our unrivaled Premier League coverage.”
Drury began commentating in 1990 on BBC Radio. Leeds after a period with the renowned Hayters news agency in London, which has been the starting point for many well-known TV presenters and journalists. He switched to BBC Radio Five Live in connection with its launch in 1994. He joined ITV in 1998, where he worked for 15 years and most recently worked on Amazon Prime Premier League coverage.
He has been voted Football Fans Association Commentator of the Year in three of the last four seasons .
