British company McMurtry Automotive has unveiled a commercial version of its Speirling electric sports car and is taking pre-orders for it. The price is hefty, starting at £820,000 tax-free, but the developers feel the Speirling's unique design and outstanding performance are worth it.
We covered McMurtry Automotive last year when its Speirling electric sports car set a record hill climb time of 39.08 seconds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, with McMurtry Automotive test driver Max Chilton driving the Speirling at the time. Founded in 2016 by Irish businessman and car enthusiast David McMurtry, the name of the first Speirling model is Irish for «hurricane».
Speirling is a very small single-seat electric sports car, its overall length is 3.45 m, width is 1.58 m, height is 1.02 m, the cockpit is designed for a pilot up to 2 m tall and weighing up to 150 kg. Speirling was originally designed as a track car, but in the future the company may release a road version, and this week the company announced the start of accepting applications for the debut track version of the Pure, which will be released in a limited edition of 100 units.
The Speirling power plant consists of two electric motors on the rear axle (each one spins its own wheel), their maximum combined power is 745 kW (1013 hp). The 60kWh battery uses highly efficient Taiwanese Molicel cells, a full charge should last for 10 battle laps at the legendary British Silverstone circuit (circle length — 5.9 km), it takes less than 20 minutes to recharge the battery from a powerful terminal.
The main technical feature of Speirling is a system of fans built into the carbon fiber body that sucks air from under the bottom and creates the so-called ground effect. Compared to last year's Goodwood-record-setting example, the Speirling Pure's fan efficiency has been increased by 15%, aerodynamics and chassis settings have been adjusted, and many components have been reduced in weight, bringing the sports car's curb weight to less than 1,000kg. 19-inch wheels have given way to lighter 18-inch wheels, but on wider tires — 270 mm front and 300 mm rear.
In general, according to the developers, the car has become faster than a year ago, cornering overloads can exceed 3g, and the maximum speed is 306 km/h. Acceleration figures are not given in the latest press release, last year it was reported that the Speirling accelerates to 60 mph (96.56 km/h) in less than 1.5 seconds.
McMurtry Speirling Pure will be premiered live at the next Goodwood Festival of Speed, this year from 13 to 16 July. The company will show a pre-production prototype in 2024, and production will begin only in 2025. Nevertheless, applications for Speirling Pure are already being accepted, and not only residents of the UK, but also other countries can make a request, even Russia is on the list. 820,000 pounds sterling is just over a million dollars in translation at the current rate, or 88.4 million rubles.
