The most budget model of the German company is preparing for restyling, and the available spy photos of test samples already allow us to evaluate how the hatchback will change.
The first series was first introduced in 2004, it became a kind of heir to the three-door BMW 3 Compact hatchbacks, produced in E36 and E46 bodies. In the first two generations, the car had a classic layout for the brand with rear-wheel drive and a longitudinal engine, and in the third (current) generation, which appeared in 2019, the hatchback moved to a front-wheel drive “bogie”. Now this car is preparing for a planned update, and prototypes have already come across the lens of photo spies more than once.
Updated 1 Series render
The most noticeable change will come at the front: the penny will get new, noticeably narrower headlights with the original LED daytime running light graphics, consisting of two vertical segments in each headlight. A similar solution has already been applied to the updated X5/X6 crossovers and the new generation “five”. The grille will change its shape and will be made in the style of the 2 Series Gran Coupe sedan. There will also be a new bumper, our render shows one of the possible options. On the side, the shape of the side glazing will change slightly due to the updated lining on the rear doors, as a result of which the classic “Hofmeister bend” will appear for the brand. As for the rear, here the main (quite possibly, and only) difference from the current model will be the lights, which will retain their shape, but will receive a completely new filling.
Updated 1 Series render
The current 1 Series is built on the modular UKL2 platform (Untere Klasse, «lower class» in German), which is also used by the sedan and 2 Series monocabs, X1/X2 crossovers, Mini Countryman and Clubman. In the cabin there will be a new screen of the multimedia system, combined with the instrument panel (like other novelties of the company), a new center console with a toggle switch instead of the gear selector lever. There is no confirmed information about the technical features of the novelty yet, it can be assumed that the model will retain a wide range of engines, some of which may receive an increase in power. Also, new hybrid modifications are likely to appear, one of which can be borrowed from the new 2 Series Active Tourer minivan: a 3-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an electric motor, producing a total of 321 hp.
