Mortgage backlash could see one in three Conservative MPs fired in next election

A backlash from mortgage holders could wipe out a majority of one in three Conservative MPs in the next general election, according to The Telegraph analysis.

The numbers show that the number of homeowners facing rapid redemption exceeds the party's majority in more than a third of the seats it holds.

Anger over the rising bill could cost the Conservatives an upcoming by-election, including in Boris Johnson's old seat in Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

This comes amid growing calls from supporters of Jeremy Hunt, Chancellor, to intervene to support families in distress.

The Tories hold the 121 seats where mortgage holders could tip the scales in the next election, out of 352 the party currently holds.

Labour is forecast to stand to gain the most if landlords ditch the Tories and get up to 85 seats from the Conservatives.

Those likely to be ousted include cabinet ministers, including Mr Hunt, who has his own electoral South West Surrey with a majority of 8,817.

There are an estimated 11,600 mortgage holders in prosperous home counties and their families face an average increase of £5,600.

Conservative supporters urged the chancellor to respond by bringing back the mortgage interest tax credit called MIRAS that was abolished by Gordon Brown.

«People are scared»

Sir Jake Berry, former chairman of the party, told the Treasury. should immediately intervene to support middle-income households, adding that “people are scared.”

“It seems inevitable to me that the government will have to act, and it should act proportionately to help those most in need,” said he.

“If you agree with that, then doing it in a controlled way before it becomes a crisis is the right way to go as you can do less earlier.

Sir Jake said support should be limited to rule out purchase. rental landlords, second homeowners and the highest paid in the country.

Bob Stewart, MP for Beckenham, said he was inundated with calls from voters who are «absolutely scared» by rising interest rates.
