Credit: Getty Images/Dario Belingheri Egan Bernal, 2019 Tour de France champion, has been named to the eight-man Ineos Grenadiers team for this year's race, which starts in Bilbao on Saturday. This will be the Colombian's first grand tour since his life-threatening accident in January 2022.
British Tom Pidcock will also return to the Tour 12 months after his famous victory at the top of the Alps d'Huez. on the stage of the Queen of last year's race.
Bernal, 26, crashed into the back of a bus while training in Columbia early last year, suffering horrific injuries, including 11 broken ribs, a broken femur, patella, T5 and T6 vertebrae, C2 vertebrae, metacarpal bone and one fracture. . thumb.
Following a modest return to action last August, Bernal's preparations for this season have included racing the WorldTour Volta a Catalunya, Itzulia Basque Country, Tour de Romandie and Critérium du Dauphiné.
< p>Bernal finished 12th at the last of these, the Critérium du Dauphiné, nearly seven minutes behind last year's Tour winner Jonas Wingegaard (Jumbo-Visma).
He is not expected to challenge Wingegaard or the two-time Tour winner Tadea Pogacara (Team Emirates UAE), two undisputed favorites for this year's yellow jersey.
Without Geraint Thomas, runner-up at last month's Giro d'Italia, or longtime team captain Luke Roe, who was eliminated, the Ineos team looks set to hunt for the stage this year, though Pidcock said earlier in this year. that he wanted to try to stay in the overall standings and win stages against the top overall contenders.
Bernal said he was just happy to be back on the Tour again. “Returning to the Tour has always been my main goal,” he said. “I am so excited to be able to experience every kilometer of this race again.
“I'm sure many people followed everything that happened to me after my accident last January and how I got through to overcome the greatest test of my life. Being part of this year's Tour team reassures me that I am on my way to getting back to my best form.»
Rod Ellingworth, vice principal of the Ineos Grenadiers, had no goals for the Colombian other than to say: “The whole team is very happy for Egan and everyone who supported him in his return to full form. It's a showcase of his character and resilience, and the incredible effort he's put into his recovery over the past 18 months.»

Tom Pidcock and Ben Turner will carry the Union Flag in the only British team on the Tour, while Ineos Grenadiers also included the very experienced Jonathan Castroviejo, Omar Fraile and Michal Kwiatkowski in their team.
Daniel Martínez could be the man to spearhead any team's faint hope of fighting for the general classification, while young Spaniard Carlos Rodríguez rounds out the eight-man squad.
“ I am thrilled to be back at the Tour de France, which promises to be another great three weeks,” said Pidcock, who won the Alpe d'Huez stage on his Tour debut last year.
“Winning an iconic stage and wearing the white jersey in 2022 is a lifetime memory and this year I want to build on that as I continue to develop my career. We have a great group of riders and we will strive to race with intent and tactically smart, following the plans we have made as a team.
“As I first saw last year, the Tour is the toughest race of of all, but also the most beautiful and historical, which makes it so iconic. I am enjoying the opportunity to do it again with my teammates and some of the best drivers in the world in front of so many passionate fans.”
Ellingworth added: “Tom showed last year what an incredibly exciting talent he is and his win at Alpe d'Huez was brilliant. We look forward to when he pushes forward again, putting into practice what he learned last year.
“In Quiato, Dani, Castro and Omar, we have a lot of experience and skills — each of these guys knows what it takes to win at the highest level.
“For Carlos and Ben, who made their debut in the Tour de France, this is an important moment that they both want to experience and embrace. They are both first-class cyclists, so they are sure to be ready to take advantage of any opportunity that comes their way.”
It's no surprise that Mark Cavendish was included in the Astana-Kazakhstan team as the manxman prepares for his last tour. The 38-year-old, who will retire at the end of the season, has set his sights on a stage win that would see him immediately set an all-time Tour record, joining Eddy Merckx in 34th in 2021.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Fred Wright ended his quest for a pro victory in style by becoming British Men's Road Racing Champion in Saltburn.

The popular 24-year-old paid a heartfelt tribute to Bahrain Victorious teammate Gino Mader, who died on June 16 in a crash on the Tour de Suisse, pointing to the sky as he crossed the finish line.
«Lots of emotion» — Wright said. “I think about a lot of things… I just wanted to enjoy the day because that's what cycling is all about. I can't stop worrying…
«[Gino] would have more faith in me today than I would in myself.»
Wright had earned a fan base for his heroism, which brought him podium places after pulling off the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España last year, but somehow still waiting to win at the highest level.
But after he leaving behind James Knox and Stevie Williams on the last of 10 laps of the grueling course, including over 3,500 meters of climb, there will be no miss this time.
Knox and Williams are cleaner climbers than Wright, but the 24-year-old the Londoner rode nimbly, attacking downhill to the foot of the Saltburn Bank, a short but steep final climb that provided the final with gradients as high as 22%.
“I was very pleased with the way I rode it,” Wright said. “I probably had the best legs of my life. I knew I needed to get around it on downhills and flats compared to them, so I used that to my advantage to use as little power as possible. It's just that all the guns fired to the bitter end.
“I still can't believe I got my first pro win, it's like a monkey off my back. “I will go to the Tour with great confidence,” he said. «I won the national championship, for now I'm happy and I'm going to keep trying.»
