Wimbledon Qualifiers are held on the renowned pitch behind the National Tennis Centre. But between the small crowd of people loitering around eating their packed lunches, Mirra Andreeva from Russia swept past, followed by a Netflix crew.
The Roehampton Community Sports Center has undergone significant changes this year. stands have been added to the main courts and attendance has been good so far. But it seems that this world is far from glamorous almost three miles from the All England Club.
Nevertheless, Andreeva's new tennis talent, which made a splash at Roland Garros, where she reached the third round, brought some excitement in what's going on here.
If not for Wimbledon's ban on Russian and Belarusian players last year, 16-year-old Andreyeva's performance in Paris could have landed her a wildcard into the main draw.
But instead, she plays in front of the cameras at the All England Club while filming a documentary movie Breakpoint, and must win three qualifying rounds to enter the sacred sites. She won her first qualifying round in a 6-3 6-1 thrashing of Spain's Rosa Vicens Mas.
“We started working together from Paris,” Andreeva told reporters about the partnership with Netflix. a fluffy microphone propped up over her head out of the camera frame. “Honestly, I'm just doing my thing, and they are around. But I agree with this. I love the attention they give me.”

Playing in qualifying is not a shame, especially as a debutant teenager. On Tuesday, two former finalists Vera Zvonareva and Eugenie Bouchard, as well as former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, were in action and Bouchard was eliminated.
Considering that Andreeva had never played on grass before Tuesday, she said Wimbledon's snub was not a bad thing. “With every match I play and win, I feel more confident on the court,” she told reporters. “In the first practice [on grass] I fell down three times, so it was quite difficult to get used to the grass. But, as we can see, so far everything is going well.”
Andreeva has spent the past week practicing on the grass at Raines Park with 14-year-old British talent Hannah Klugman, whom she described as a «quality» hitting partner. Although Klugman's Wimbledon qualification ended on Tuesday with a first-round loss, she is expected to play in the women's tournament over the next two weeks. By the close of play on Thursday, only 16 will make it to the main draw, where a £55,000 prize pool is guaranteed.
Andreeva could be one of them and hopes her 18-year-old sister Erika will be there as well. Documenting their journey could be a masterstroke for Netflix.
Elsewhere, British No. 1 Kathy Boulter said she felt well-prepared for Wimbledon despite a 6-4, 7-5 loss to world No. 30 Petra Martic in Eastbourne on Tuesday.
Playing in strong winds, Boulter chanced but failed to take any of her five break points. While the seasoned Martić scored one break in each set.
After that, Boulter told reporters: “I don’t think that in the last couple of weeks I lost confidence just because I lost to higher-ranked players . I played seven games on grass. I am very pleased with my position.”
