Large crossover Mazda CX-9 leaves its main market

Nine place will be taken by a cross from the new premium family of the Japanese brand.

The Mazda CX-9 three-row crossover has been in service since 2006, it moved to the second generation in 2015, the last more or less significant update was carried out in 2020. «Nine» is a global model, but the main market for it has always been the States. There, in the previous couple of years, the cross had a circulation of 34,500 copies, and this year the SUV is even “in the black”: from January to May, 16,496 units were sold, which is almost 10% more compared to the same period in 2022. However, the Mazda CX-9 is leaving the US market, as officially announced today by the local division of the brand.

In the USA, cars are delivered from Japan (now only CX-9 production has been established there; before the start of the well-known events, SUVs were also assembled in Vladivostok). So it was announced that the current 2023 model year for the “nine” will be the last, that is, the production of crossovers for the States will be curtailed in the near future. Mazda did not specify whether we are talking about the resignation of the model as a whole, or in other markets it will still remain. At the same time, the media previously wrote that the cross could also be removed from the Australian brand line (but there has not yet been an official release on this issue in Australia).

In general, the departure of the CX-9 from America was expected: there, this model will be replaced by another three-row crossover — the Mazda CX-90 (already on sale), which belongs to the so-called premium family. Recall that today Mazda's premium line still includes the Mazda CX-60 cross, addressed mainly to Europe and Japan; on the way — CX-70 (for the USA) and CX-80 (for the Old World). Prestigious models are made on a platform with a longitudinal engine and basic rear-wheel drive. However, in the US all Mazda SUVs are all-wheel drive by default. 4

The Mazda CX-9 crossover is still available in the showrooms of American dealers — it is possible that stocks will last until next year or even several months of 2024. The model is offered with a non-alternative Skyactiv-G 2.5 turbo engine, which produces 253 hp. and is paired with a six-speed automatic. Price — from 38,750 dollars. For comparison, the Mazda CX-90 cross costs from $39,595 there. All prices, traditionally for the USA, are excluding taxes and delivery.
