Chris Pincher suspension leaves Rishi Sunak facing new by-election battle

The Standards Committee has recommended the eight-week suspension of Mr. Pincher, the former government whip who has since represented the Tamworth constituency. 2010, and last year was an independent.

The suspension is well over 10 days, which triggers a process that gives voters the right to recall him as an MP. If they do, it will mean a by-election for his Tamworth seat.

The prime minister faces four by-elections following the resignations of Boris Johnson, Nigel Adams, David Warburton and Nadine Dorris. MPs while the Conservative Party struggles in the polls.

Mr Pincher was found to have groped two men at the Carlton Club in June 2022 while drunk, grabbing the first by the arm before stroking him around the neck and squeeze his buttocks.

The second man, a civil servant, accused Mr. Pincher of touching his buttocks and squeezing his testicles.

The parliamentary observer stated that his behavior «was completely inappropriate, caused serious damage to the persons concerned and constituted an abuse of power.»

The report of the Standards Committee states: «The violation we are considering is solely that whether Mr. Pincher has caused significant damage to the reputation and integrity of the Chamber as a whole, or of its members as a whole.”

«The perception that MPs can engage in such behavior with impunity has a significant impact on public opinion of the House and its members.

«We therefore recommend that Mr. Pincher be suspended from the House for eight weeks.»

The Committee added that the fact that Mr. Pincher was Deputy Chief Whip in the government was «an aggravating circumstance» as «he was responsible for enforcing party discipline and upholding standards.» A House of Lords official at the time described the events as «traumatic» and said they made him lose sleep.

The second man said that the incident made him «more and more worried», prompting him to take medication to manage his symptoms, and that he was «afraid» that the encounter might affect his work and future plans.

< p>In mitigation, the committee noted that Mr. Pincher expressed genuine remorse, and in his submission to the committee, he apologized to those affected.

They noted that he immediately resigned as government minister and, in doing so, took responsibility for his actions and cooperated with the commissioner's investigation.

The Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards told committee members that he had damaged the reputation of the House of Representatives.

The commissioner told the committee that «the serious and public nature of [Mr. Pincher's] misconduct means that his behavior caused significant and lasting damage to the reputation and integrity of the Chamber.”

Mr. Pincher retired from the front and lost his whip after being accused of assaulting two men while drunk, meaning he now sits as an independent.

«Do the right thing and resign» ,

Angela Reiner, Deputy Labor Leader, called on Mr Pincher to step down as MP.

She said: “Chris Pincher's actions are shocking. But what's even worse is how the Conservative Party has defended and even promoted him, despite a previous investigation into his conduct.

“Chris Pincher must now do the right thing and resign as an MP. The people of Tamworth and nearby villages deserve more from their representative in Parliament.»

The bill, passed in the wake of the spending scandal, means anyone suspended from the Commons for more than 10 days faces a petition a recall petition.< /p>

A petition for recall can be initiated for his seat in Staffordshire if the committee recommends a suspension of at least 10 days of sittings and is approved by the broad house of commons.

If 10 percent of Tamworth voters sign it, then the Conservatives, staggering in the national polls, will have to defend another constituency won by the Tories in 2019.

Two of the three by-elections scheduled to take place on July 20 were called the resignations of Mr. Johnson and his ally Mr. Adams.

The third was caused by the resignation of Mr. Warburton amid allegations of sexual harassment and cocaine use.

Another one is due whenever Ms. Dorris decides to formally retire.

Mr. Pincher's resignation as Deputy Chief Whip last year hastened Mr. Johnson as prime minister.

>

Mr Johnson has already fought to remain prime minister, although he was dogged by allegations against the party, and the decision of this case was the last straw to support his cabinet.

He appointed a member of parliament to a senior position in charge of party discipline. despite being aware of the official complaint about his previous behavior.
