Production of ABS and ESP systems has started: production has been launched in Kostroma

It is reported that the blocks of these electronic systems are manufactured on the new line of the Itelma research and production enterprise.

The Russian auto industry faced a number of problems last year due to the refusal of many foreign companies to continue doing business in the country. As a result, local factories had to go into idle time for a fairly long period, since they could not produce cars that met the requirements. In May 2022, legislators decided to soften the norms, after which “simplified” cars began to roll off the assembly lines of Russian enterprises.

Now the «pre-crisis» version of the technical regulations in the automotive industry is returning: the Russian government made a corresponding decision at the beginning of last month. According to the plan, all requirements must return to the previous version of the document by February 1, 2024.

It is worth recalling that the list of “paused” requirements for the production of cars includes the presence of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and an electronic stabilization system (ESP). However, towards the end of this year, they will again become mandatory for new cars sent to the Russian market. Earlier, according to Vasily Shpak, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, it became known that the production of these systems would be launched in the Russian Federation.

Now TASS reports that the production of ABS and ESP for passenger cars has started in Russia: the production of the corresponding blocks was launched in Kostroma, on a new line of the Itelma research and production enterprise. It is reported that for this purpose a workshop with a fully automated production line was built.

As Vasily Shpak noted during the launch ceremony, at present «the consumer segment of the auto electronics market requires a significant amount of electronic components.» According to TASS, the project for the production of ABS and ESP systems in Kostroma is completely commercial, no subsidies and budgetary funds were used for its implementation.

The volume of production of anti-lock brake systems and electronic stabilization systems at this site will initially be about 850 thousand units per year. In the future, the company plans to increase this annual figure to 1.2 million units. It is reported that NPP Itelma plans to cover the demand of Russian automakers in full.

Note that the production of ABS and ESP systems in the Russian Federation was previously carried out by Robert Bosch Samara. The fact that this asset was acquired by FSUE NAMI (a structure subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Trade) became known last month. It is assumed that the production of systems will be launched at this production site in 2024, and from 2025 the volumes will reach the design capacity.
