Arsenal drew first blood in the 2023/24 English Football Season with a Community Shield win. Cole Palmer's goal looked like he had won the match for Manchester City, but Arsenal hit back in stoppage time as Leandro Trossar equalized.
In the penalty shootout, Kevin de Bruyne and Rodrigo missed City's goal, allowing Fabio Vieira to score the winner. Here's how the players rated it.
Arsenal (4-3-3) Aaron Ramsdale
Great save in the shootout after 90 minutes of great form. Rodri covered the shot in the middle line and well deflected shots from the Stones, Foden and Rodri in the second half. No chance with Palmer's goal. 8/10
Ben White
Timed to take the lead from full back and when he ran to City halfway through the first half created a chance that either Havertz or Martinelli could finish the game. Good fight with Grealish. 6/10
Gabriel Magalhães
Get in the way of traffic when City tried to find a way out. He played well in defense against the best striker in the Premier League. RESERVED. 6/10
William Saliba
His future is now sealed after signing a new deal this summer and he will no doubt be a mainstay of Arsenal's defense this season. Looks collected and positions himself well as Haaland gravitated towards him. 7/10
Urrien Timber
A very good start for the £34m summer recruit from Ajax, who played at the center of the Dutch giants' defense for most of last season but looked comfortable to left back where he had the speed to get out of trouble and wandered inside with the ball. Upper block to deny Palmer. 7/10
Thomas Partey
I could have prepared better for Palmer's goal. First he grabbed Alvarez to earn a warning, and then he was on the verge. Loss of the ball due to Rodrigo's chance at a sloppy moment when he was trying to force the game. RESERVED. 5/10
Declan Rice
The most expensive British player threw himself into dogfights and moved well around the pitch without being a player who made his team work. It will come with time as he gets used to his teammates and Arsenal's style. 6/10
Martin Odegaard
Some great touches as he took the ball and tried to set up for his team from his position between midfield and front line. Began to drive the crowd in the second half of the match by a thread. 6/10

Cut inside and went past his first chance, slowly getting into the game in the first half. Also pick up Havertz for a good chance as he wanted to pick up where he left off before the summer holidays in England. 6/10
Kai Havertz
Appointed as a midfielder, but needed at number 9 and showed a good game in the delay. He had two great chances to score in the first half, but Ortega saved the shot twice and he may have felt he could do better with the finishing moves. Got a yellow card for an unnecessary trip to the Stones. RESERVED. 5/10
Gabriel Martinelli
Lost the ball in the danger zone in the first half and almost got penalized. Saw a goal as Arsenal entered the game but his shot was blocked by the Stones. 5/10
Subs: Trossard 75 (Martinelli), Nketiah 80 (Rice), Smith Roe 87 (Gabriel), Vieira, 87 (Havertz) , Tierney 76 (Timber).
Not used: Turner (g), Kevor, Holding, Tomiyasu.
Warning: Arteta
Manchester City (4-2-4) Stefan Ortega
He was reliable during his time at City and here he made two saves to beat Havertz. With the ball at his feet, he sometimes outruns his centre-backs like a sweeper. 6/10
Kyle Walker
His future is unclear as Bayern Munich want him before the transfer deadline, but he has been handed the captain's armband as a sign of his position in that city team. 6/10
John Stones
It took him 15 minutes before he started wandering in midfield, but overall he was an orthodox central defender and got in the way of everything, including a bold block with his hands behind his back . 8/10
Ruben Diaz
Injured early in the second half, but that's unavoidable given the way he commands the backcourt. This season he will again become the main central defender of Pep Guardiola. Won important duels. 7/10
Manuel Akanji
Desperately unlucky with the deflection on the equalizer. Previously, he has become more adventurous in his runs forward as he gets used to the left-back role under Guardiola. Very solid when he goes one on one against a winger. 6/10
Mateo Kovacic
Won the ball in the first 30 seconds, showing signs of making his debut for City after a summer move from Chelsea. He pushed the ball forward and behind City, showing his game to both sides, so Guardiola hired him. 6/10
Rodrigo
He clearly has a taste for goals after winning the Champions League final last season. He hit wide of the target from the edge of the penalty area, struck from the middle of the field and almost scored with a header in a jump. All actions. 7/10
Bernardo Silva
Why City entertain him by leaving remains a mystery. Clubs in Saudi Arabia would love such a player in their league — everything he touches is class and almost never makes a mistake adding energy. Will be more productive on other days. 6/10
Julian Alvarez
Yellow yellow for kicking the ball in the first half and creating a halftime chance for Foden in the second. It takes a bit of work to play up front with Haaland, but it could be dangerous this season. RESERVED. 6/10
Erling Haaland
Tried hard to get into the game, and the chances were slim and far — he didn't sniff. However, he can't be faulted for work speed and holds the ball for his teammates. 5/10
Jack Grealish
Would like to cross more from the flank, but still had possession and looked threatening at times. Foden and Palmer attacked from a different angle when they entered the field and changed the game. 5/10
Subs: Foden 58 (Greelish), Palmer 64 (Haaland), De Bruyne 64 (Kovacic).
Not used: Ederson (g), Phillips, Laporte, Gomez, Lewis, McAtee
