Forensic image. Hamza Yusuf admitted that the evidence-style evidence tent on the lawn in front of Nicola Sturgeon «stuck into the heads» of voters and undermined the SNP agenda.
First Minister admitted that the police investigation into the finances of the SNP, which saw them arrested his predecessor, «crashed» into the public amid a sharp drop in support for his party.
Speaking to comedian Matt Ford at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he said he continued to believe Ms Sturgeon when she insisted the investigation was not the reason for her resignation.
However, he admitted he was «disappointed »that the ongoing saga has overshadowed his work in government.

On independence, Mr Yusuf admitted he was «not in control» when the prime minister granted a second vote on separation, despite earlier claims that Scotland could become a state within five years.
He also spoke about his own mental health «struggles» as a result of workplace stress and revealed that he had received professional help in the past.
«Politicians are very good at preaching good mental health and good physical health, and I think it's pretty badly practiced,” he said.
“I mean, at times I struggled with my mental health in this job. . And one of the best things I've ever done was getting counseling in 2016.
“But your mental health can take a big hit in this job. And I think if you're in the best physical shape it will help you with your mental health.»
Salmond calls for a split in the SNP-Greens
Meanwhile, on his own Fringe show, Alex Salmond, former First Minister, urged Mr Yousaf to break up his party's contentious coalition deal with the far-left Scottish Greens.
Mr Salmond, current leader of the Alba Party, said: «I hope Humza Yousaf is going to sort out the Scottish National government difficulties Party.
“If he had followed my advice, I would have started by ending the coalition with the Green Party.
“There is no reason why the Scottish National Party, which consists of 64 members of the Scottish Parliament out of 129 , cannot govern smoothly and coherently as a political party.”
