The British brand MG, owned by the Chinese auto concern SAIC, continues to expand the line of modifications of the MG4 electric hatchback, which has become very popular in Europe: Extended Range version with 77 kWh battery, capable of driving 520 km on a single charge.
MG4 Electric (aka MG Mulan in China) debuted last summer, Europe became its main sales market: according to the analytical agency JATO Dynamics, 30,779 copies of MG4 were sold here from January to June this year — this is the sixth place in the list of best-selling electric car in Europe. The top five are Tesla Model Y (136,564 units sold in the first half of the year), Tesla Model 3 (42,588 units), VW ID.4 (41,672 units), VW ID.3 (35,233 units) and Fiat 500e (31,340 units).
In July, the MG4 received the most powerful and fastest twin-engine all-wheel drive version of the XPower in the range, capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, and now the previously announced single-engine rear-wheel drive version of the Extended Range has gone on sale in the UK. Curiously, it costs the same as the Xpower version, starting at £36,495.
The MG4 Extended Range is equipped with the most capacious 77 kWh battery in the range (of which 74.4 kWh are available to the consumer), its full charge is enough for 520 km of the WLTP cycle. Previously, the hatchback was only available with either 51 kWh or 64 kWh batteries, even the 435-horsepower version of the Xpower is content with a 64 kWh battery and can travel 385 km on a single charge.
The Extended Range version is also the most powerful single-engine version: the maximum output of the engine mounted on the rear axle here is 180 kW (245 hp) and 350 Nm. the first «hundred» MG4 Extended Range is gaining in 6.5 s. In other mono-drive versions, the electric motor produces 170 or 204 hp, and the range on one charge varies from 350 to 450 km, depending on the modification.
In the European market, the MG4 competes mainly with the Volkswagen ID.3, and the latter still lacks the long-promised GTX twin-engine all-wheel drive modification. It turns out that SAIC brought the full range of MG4s to market in just a year, and its price range is lower than that of the German competitor: VW ID.3 now costs in the UK from 37,115 pounds, while the owner of MG4 can be purchased for as little as 26,995 pounds sterling.
Add that SAIC is now looking for a site in Europe to localize the production of MG cars (so far they all come to Europe from China) and the first European registration will most likely be MG4.
