This week saw the official premiere of the new generation Passat, and a cross version should join it later. What will it be like?
The Passat family of mid-size cars appeared in 1973, taking its name from the wind of the same name. The design of the first generation was developed by the famous Italian coachbuilder Ital Design under the direction of Giorgetto Giugiaro. Throughout its half-century history, the model was offered in different bodies, among which were the well-known sedan and station wagon, as well as a hatchback (there was even a three-door version). The ninth generation, demonstrated a few days ago and received the B9 factory index, will be presented only as a station wagon. This is due to the loss of demand for sedans, sales of this version of the Passat in Europe were completed last year. However, there should still be some choice, because in the near future a cross-version of the usual station wagon should be paired with it, which was first introduced in 2010 on the basis of the seventh generation (B7).

So far, there has been no information about the features of its appearance, but we can assume that the cross-wagon will be made in the style of other similar models of the company. It will be distinguished by increased ground clearance, original wheels, a plastic body kit consisting of pads for wheel arches, sills and bumpers. As with the previous generation model, all this all-terrain entourage will be supported by an all-wheel drive transmission.

The new Passat B9 is built on a modified MQB Evo platform. Thanks to the upgrade for a surcharge, the station wagon now has an adaptive DCC Pro suspension: the new shock absorbers have two controlled valves for compression and rebound. The model will be offered with a wide range of powertrains, including pure petrol (2.0 TSI with 204 or 265 hp) and diesel (2.0 TDI with 122, 155 or 193 hp) versions, as well as, although the base rate in Europe will be on electrified options. Among them there is both a “soft” hybrid equipped with a 1.5 eTSI (150 hp) petrol “turbo four” with a half-cylinder deactivation system and a 48-volt starter-generator, and a pair of rechargeable with the eHybrid prefix (formerly Passat GTE) total 204 and 272 hp
