Heath Strick, Zimbabwean all-time great Ralph and former captain, has died at 49. He suffered from colon and liver cancer.

The news comes less than two weeks after his family was forced to deny premature reports of his passing that were posted on social media. Henry Olonga, Strick's former teammate, mistakenly announced that Strick had died on August 23 before promptly correcting the record. Strick said the rumors were «very upsetting and hurt him.»

However, this time Strick's wife, Nadine, confirmed that he had died.

«Early this Sunday morning , September 3, 2023, the greatest love of my life and the father of my beautiful children was transferred to the Angels from his home, where he wished to spend his last days surrounded by his family and loved ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

< p>Strick revealed earlier this year that he had cancer and had reached stage four.

Strick was one of Zimbabwe's top cricketers and played in his greatest era, his international career spanning from 1993 to 2005 year. He played 65 Tests and 189 one-day internationals. He also captained his national team between 2000 and 2004 and played for Warwickshire and Hampshire in County Cricket.

Streek scored 216 Test wickets (no other Zimbabwean has 100) and 239 ODIs to enter the Test century and rank seventh on the all-time list scorers of their country in test races. He led Zimbabwe during a period of great political upheaval and resigned in 2004 after a conflict between the board and the players.

Olonga was among the many former cricketers who paid tribute. Kumar Sangakkara, a great batsman from Sri Lanka, said: “Extremely saddened by the news of the passing of Heath Strick. Love and prayers to the Striki family. So many fond memories of our time together, no more than his opening his home for me to share with the Potgy family during my first stay in Warwickshire. A wonderful person and cricketer. Rest well, Strick.»

Zimbabwe Cricket Team said in a statement: «It is with deep sadness that Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) learned of the sad passing of former Zimbabwe captain and coach Heath Strick after losing his battle against colon and liver cancer early this Sunday.»

ZC Chairman Mr Tawengwa Mukuhlani called Strick an «icon».

“This is a very sad day for Zimbabwe and a sad day for cricket as we, on the one hand, mourn the passing of a true great player in our beautiful game, and on the other, celebrate the greatness of what the Hit gave us: he played with passion, spirit and was nothing less than an inspiring figure who has raised our flag high and impacted the lives of people in and out of sport,” he said.

“On behalf of ZC’s board, management, players and staff, I would like to would like to express our sincere condolences to Heath's loving wife, Nadine, his family, friends and the entire cricketing fraternity on the loss of the badge.»

England in black armbands

Warwickshire players wore black armbands on the opening day of the match against Surrey at the Kia Oval, and a minute of silence was observed before Hampshire's home game against Somerset. The England team also wore black armbands for Sunday's T20 match against New Zealand.

Streek's legacy in cricket is complicated by the fact that he was banned from any participation in the sport until 2029 after admitting various violations of the ICC anti-corruption code. In 2021, he received five accusations in his post-game coaching career, including for the Zimbabwe national team.

Strick was found to have shared insider information with an unnamed Indian man with the caption «Mr X» before international cricket matches , the Bangladesh Premier League, the Indian Premier League and the Afghanistan Premier League, and shared the contact details of four players. . It was revealed that he had received gifts, including $35,000 in bitcoin and an iPhone. This happened between 2017 and 2018.

Hit Strick was Zimbabwe's top bowler until his troubled and corrupt retirement: a fast to mid-level player who took 216 Test wickets in just 28 runs in his 65 Tests.

Strick excelled on the Zimbabwean tennis ball bounce fields, taking 120 Test wickets at odds of 25.9, and overseas when his new ball hitting and stamina earned him 96 wickets at age 30. There was something of a young bullish elephant in his strength on the field. his peak, combined with his own athleticism.

Strick was only 19 years old when he made his Test debut on the Zimbabwean tour of Pakistan. Zimbabwe has always lacked resources in all areas (with the exception of wickets), but it was still recognition of the potential of a strong young bowler.

His father Dennis also played cricket and lived on the family farm near Bulawayo. It was a privileged existence, whether it was during the Southern Rhodesian or Zimbabwean era, and it was the most beautiful piece of land that could be found on earth, at least when the drought didn't bother him, as it did when he gave me a tour. . .

This upbringing also contributed to athletic achievement, as there was enough space on the farm to play. Admission to Falcon College was another stepping stone on the path to a national career: elite schools played the same role in preparing test cricketers in Zimbabwe as they did in Sri Lanka or England.

But it wasn't a privilege to be. threw himself into the Zimbabwe bowling attack on a tour of Pakistan in late 1993, just hard work. For the 19-year-old, who scored eight wickets in three Tests of 35 runs each at Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore, it was a testament to exceptional talent.

Essentially, Strick was the poor man's Sir Richard Hadley. Hadley ran New Zealand bowling almost on his own in the 1980s, and Strick soon did so in the 1990s in Zimbabwe. No other bowler has taken 100 test wickets in Zimbabwe, let alone 200. Next is left-hander Ray Price with 80, and thus he will be around for a long time given the state of the Zimbabwean economy and cricket.

Streak coming soon came into conflict with what was generally seen as a corrupt government that did not pay Zimbabwean players their due. He kept going, became captain and developed his hitting to the point where he scored a Test 100, but he was much better prepared playing for Hampshire and Warwickshire. in test cricket. Ten runs short, he had new problems: match-fixing had always had a soft spot for Zimbabwean cricketers, as they were underpaid and paid late, if at all.
