Disney heiress advocates tax on 'super rich'

The Disney heiress has launched a call for a tax on the 'super rich', blaming the world's richest people for creating an 'economic, environmental and human rights disaster'.

Abigail Disney, who has previously said she feels so guilty about being born rich that it's hard for her to sleep, is among the signatories of a letter sent to G20 leaders ahead of the summit later this week.

The letter, which was signed by 300 people including filmmaker Richard Curtis, US politician Bernie Sanders and Labor MPs, said: «Decades of tax cuts on the richest, based on false promises that wealth at the top would somehow benefit everyone.» us, has contributed to extreme inequality.

“Our policy choices allow the super-rich to continue enjoying tax havens and benefits to the extent that in most countries of the world they pay lower tax rates than ordinary people.”< /p>

Ms. Disney, who is worth $110 million, is an outspoken social activist and has previously criticized CEO Bob Iger for running her family's business, saying last month that «money and power have stolen his feelings.»

She is the granddaughter of Disney co-founder Roy O. Disney and a shareholder in a media empire.

In a July interview with Rolling Stone, she said: «One day I woke up and realized that just because I was lucky, I had much more than everyone else.»

Where the super rich hide their wealth

Patriotic Millionaires, the group behind the letter, aims to emulate the global minimum company tax coordinated by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a group of 38 countries.

«In 2021, the G20 and other organizations worked together to ensure that multinational corporations pay the minimum level of taxes,” the letter says.

“Now the G20 must collectively agree to raise taxes on the richest people. through truly inclusive and ambitious international cooperation to tax wealth and end tax competition and tax evasion by the richest people.”

The letter did not provide details on the structure of such a tax or who would be considered eligible, but the campaign group said: «A tax of 1-2% on those with more than £10m in the UK would bring in up to £22bn each time.» year.»

Britain is a member of the G20 along with the US, France, Germany, China, India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

Four MPs from the Labor Party: Richard Burgon and Rebecca Long Bailey, Dan Cardin and Ian Byrne are listed as signatories, despite the fact that the party insists it will not impose a wealth tax if it wins the next election.

Rachel Reeves, the Shadow Chancellor of the Labor Party, just told the Telegraph more weeks ago: «I'm very supportive of wealth creation and want to see more of it in Britain.»
