Jill Biden tests positive for Covid-19, White House says.
The wife of the US president is resting at their home in Delaware with «mild symptoms,» her spokeswoman said, and Joe Biden tested negative for the virus.< /p>
The announcement came after the couple visited Florida on Saturday to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia.
Biden, 72, last tested positive for the virus last August, after Biden himself recovered from the same disease.
At that time, both initially recovered, and a few days later received positive test results.
They are at high risk because of their age, but both have been vaccinated.
Elizabeth Alexander, Ms. Biden's communications director, said: «Tonight, the first lady tested positive on Covid-19. She is currently experiencing only mild symptoms. She will stay at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.»
Karine Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary, said: «Following the first lady's positive test for Covid-19, President Biden was scheduled to test for Covid tonight. The president's test came back negative. The President will be regularly tested and monitored for symptoms this week.”
The number of cases of the virus has risen in the United States in recent weeks, with hospitalizations up 19 percent to 15,067 nationwide by August 19 . .
Deaths rose 18 percent in the week ending August 16, according to the latest update on the Centers for Disease Control and Protection website.
