Special prosecutor investigating Hunter Biden hopes to be indicted by the end of the month, according to new court documents.
David Weiss, who has been given special powers to independently investigate the president's son, said in a court document that will seek an indictment will be delivered by a grand jury by September 29.
Biden, 53, is charged with violating federal firearms law for possession of a handgun, being addicted to drugs, and tax evasion.
It is unclear from Mr. Weiss intends to file this month.
The prosecution of Mr. Biden could harm his father, whom Republicans have accused of interfering in the case to protect his son and his administration.
Weiss was named special counsel on August 11, in a move widely interpreted as an attempt by the federal government to distance itself from the case.
An attempt to combine the tax and gun cases into a plea deal collapsed earlier this year after a judge refused to accept Biden's plan to plead guilty to $1.5 million in tax evasion on income between 2017 and 2018.
By agreement, he would enter into a separate agreement to deferred prosecution for illegal possession of a firearm while using drugs.
Biden's lawyers said in court documents last month that prosecutors violated the plea agreement. , which they believe would have given him permanent immunity.
It was ultimately dismissed by District Judge Maryellen Noreika, who raised concerns about its legality and the scope of the immunity it offered.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mr. Weiss wrote: «The Expedited Trial Act requires the government to seek the return of the grand jury indictment no earlier than Friday, September 29, 2023.»
«The government intends to seek the return of the indictment in this case by this date.”
Republicans in Congress are seeking to impeach President Biden over allegations that he was involved in his son’s business dealings during his tenure as Vice President Barack Obama .
Some Republicans in the House of Representatives responded by calling for impeachment. for supporting a future fiscal law that will fund federal agencies after the end of September.
“If you look at all the information we have been able to gather so far, that you will have to turn to an impeachment inquiry is a natural step forward,” Kevin McCarthy, speaker of the House of Representatives, told Fox News on August 27. /p>
Republicans have also accused the White House of brokering a «love deal» for Biden in an attempt to avoid the embarrassing trial that could take place during the 2024 presidential campaign.
Donald Trump, the leader of the Republican Party, took advantage of the scandal and started calling Crooked Joe president.
Trump first appointed Weiss as U.S. Attorney in 2018 and made him responsible for the Hunter Biden case a year later.
Last month, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Weiss asked to be his lawyer. given the special counsel's role in the case, which gives him more investigative authority.
These include the ability to bring charges against Biden outside of his home state of Delaware, raising speculation that they could be moved to California or Washington, D.C.
In announcing the appointment, Mr. Garland said it «reaffirms that Mr. Weiss has the authority he needs to conduct a thorough investigation and continue taking action as he deems appropriate, independently, based only on facts and the law.”
