The SUV retains gasoline and diesel engines, while in Europe the main focus, of course, is on hybrids — and there are more such versions .
The very first Volkswagen Tiguan debuted in 2007, the crossover moved to the next generation in 2016, and the “second” SUV experienced a full restyling in 2020. The Tiguan has become one of the most popular models of the brand: since its introduction, it has sold over 7.6 million copies worldwide. And now the third generation cross is presented. By the way, according to German specialized media, the predecessor will remain in service, but only in the stretched Allspace version: a replacement for the seven-seat version will appear in 2025, and it will be renamed Tayron (now this name is borne by the Chinese brother of the previous Tiguan).
Three generations of Volkswagen Tiguan
The “third” VW Tiguan is based on the MQB Evo platform, thanks to which, as in the case of the fresh VW Passat station wagon, the DCC Pro adaptive suspension has become optionally available for the crossover: the new shock absorbers have two controlled valves each — for compression and rebound. But there are no more mechanics in Europe — only DSG.

The “old-world” SUV has added 30 mm in length (now 4539 mm), and the height has increased by a symbolic 4 mm to 1639 mm. The width and wheelbase have not changed at all — 1842 and 2680 mm, respectively. The drag coefficient is 0.28 instead of 0.33 for the previous SUV. Volkswagen also announced that despite a slight change in length, the crossover's trunk has become more spacious: now 652 liters versus 615 liters for its predecessor.
The appearance is made in the current “rounded” style of the brand, more typical for “electric trains”. For an extra charge, IQ.Light HD matrix optics are available (19,200 LEDs in each headlight). The models are equipped with wheels with a diameter of up to 20 inches. As before, customers will also be able to choose a crossover with a “sporty” R-Line package (the red-orange SUV in the photo), the features of this Tiguan are a radiator grille with a mesh instead of horizontal shiny stripes and more aggressive bumpers.

The MIB4 multimedia display can be 12.9 or 15 inches diagonal; touch strips are built into the lower part of its body, with which you can adjust the “climate”.

Volkswagen Tiguan has lost its usual gearbox selector — the right steering column lever is responsible for controlling the transmission. And on the central tunnel there is now a washer with a small screen: the circle can be used to select the driving mode and adjust the volume of the multimedia system, in addition, it is able to change the backlight and diode pattern on the glossy inserts that adorn the panel and doors.

The list of equipment also includes a head-up display, ergoAcrive front seats with ventilation and massage function, and a remote parking system (it can be controlled from a smartphone). There are also all-round cameras, adaptive cruise control, auto braking systems, automatic headlight switching, lane keeping and traffic sign recognition.

The new Tiguan has a wide range of engines. However, there will no longer be a purely petrol version with 1.5 TSI in Europe; instead, there will be a “mild” hybrid with a 1.5 eTSI turbo-four (130 or 150 hp), which has a system for shutting off half of the cylinders and a 48-volt starter-generator (recoil is an additional 20 hp), which helps in the first seconds of acceleration. “Mild hybrid” Tiguans are equipped with 7DSG; such cars only come with front-wheel drive. The “traditional” options are the petrol 2.0 TSI (204 or 265 hp) and the turbodiesel 2.0 TDI (150 or 193 hp), they are also equipped with 7DSG. VW Tiguan with a two-liter gasoline engine has all-wheel drive by default; the diesel SUV has the 4Motion system only in the most powerful version.
Well, there are now two rechargeable Tiguan eHybrid hybrids, their technology is the same as that of the new Passat eHybrid: the 1.4 TSI turbo engine is replaced by a 1.5 TSI engine operating on the economical Miller cycle; The six-speed eDSG has an electric motor built into it. On the basic version, the internal combustion engine produces 150 hp, the total system power is 204 hp. The second version has a 177-horsepower 1.5 TSI, the total output is 272 hp. The battery is also new – with a capacity of 19.7 kWh. On electric power alone, such an SUV will be able to travel 100 km, with a total range of about 1000 km. Let us remind you that the predecessor has a 245-horsepower unit.

The new generation Volkswagen Tiguan will hit the European market in the first quarter of next year. According to preliminary data, in Germany the starting price of the crossover will be 36,600 euros, while the “second” SUV there now costs from 32,930 euros. In Russia, the new SUV now only has a “parallel” future.
