The French steal Sunak's thunder at rival AI summit

Meanwhile, the Global AI Security Summit in the UK will focus on potential risks and how to control them. The Telegraph reported this week that Rishi Sunak believes we only have a “small window” to address the threats posed by AI.

The Bletchley Park summit will focus on how to stop the use of AI by bad actors, such as those trying to create powerful biological weapons or cyber attacks. It will also examine the risk of humanity losing control of its artificial intelligence tools.

The UK's emphasis on the dangers of artificial intelligence has caused some confusion among the technology's pioneers, who believe such existential threats are overblown.

Paris has become a hotbed of artificial intelligence talent and is home to some of Europe's most valuable machine learning startups.

This summer, Mistral, a French artificial intelligence company, raised €105 million just four weeks after it was founded. Another startup, Poolside AI, has raised €118 million and moved its team from the US to Paris.

Mr Niel told Bloomberg: “When you visit any artificial intelligence lab in the world, you will find that there is always researchers from French schools… Our challenge is how to get them to stay here or come back if they are abroad.»

A government spokesman said: «The UK will host the first major global summit on AI security in November this year, bringing together key countries as well as leading technology companies, civil society and researchers to take focused and rapid international action.
