Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England, backed Rachel Reeves as the next chancellor in a surprise endorsement at the Labor Party conference.

The short video message was shown after Ms Reeves, Labour's shadow chancellor, gave a speech promising «iron discipline». on the public finances if the party wins the next general election.

Mr Carney, who was hand-picked for the bank job by then Tory chancellor George Osborne in 2013, said of Ms Reeves: «It's beyond time.» we bring her energy and ideas to life.»

The surprise announcement was welcomed by Labor Party delegates and welcomed by Ms Reeves' team, with her spokesman saying she was «incredibly proud» of the support.

< p>Ms. Reeves used her speech at the conference, perhaps her last before the next general. in the election to raise economic themes most commonly associated with the Conservative Party.

She said she wanted to cut taxes, vowed to impose «iron discipline» on public finances and said she would not tolerate taxpayers. money is wasted.

Some political commentators claim Ms Reeves favored Margaret Thatcher, the former Conservative Party prime minister nicknamed the «Iron Lady».

She also appears to have echoed Thatcher when she vowed to do so. go after those who profited from the “garbage carnival” during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The shadow chancellor said: «We want our money back» after announcing the Labor government would appoint a «Covid anti-corruption commissioner» to «go after those who ripped off the taxpayer.»

Seems like comments be an echo of Thatcher, who won a four-year battle to cut Britain's payments to the European Economic Community in 1980 after famously declaring: «I want my money back.»

The Tories attacked Ms Reeves for not directly mentioning inflation in her speech, with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt accusing her of ignoring the economy's «biggest problem».

The attack was an attempt to repeat the backlash when Ed Miliband, the then leader of the Labor Party, forgot to mention the deficit in his conference speech in 2014.

But Ms Reeves did talk about the cost of living and the impact of Liz Truss's economic policies, both of which are linked to high prices. < /p>

Mr Carney said in his video: “Rachel Reeves is a serious economist. She started her career at the Bank of England, so she understands the big picture.

“But most importantly, she understands the economics of work, place and family. And, look, we have no time to put her energy and ideas into action.”

Mr Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of England by Mr Osborne in July 2013, three years after David Cameron's premiership, and remained in this post until March 2020.

Canadian financier Carney has long been talked about as a potential future candidate to lead the Liberal Party of Canada, which is currently led by Justin Trudeau, Canada's prime minister. Jacob Rees-Mogg, the former Conservative business minister, said The Telegraph: “This is not surprising. Carney was a highly partisan governor of the Bank of England, leading it through a period of failed monetary policy that led to high inflation. That he is a socialist supporter is consistent with his Europhile and green propaganda.»

Ms Reeves, who hopes to become Britain's first female chancellor, gave a conference speech in Liverpool to a packed audience.

On taxes, Ms Reeves said : “I didn’t come into politics to raise taxes for working people. Indeed, I want them to be lower.

“But the Tories have saddled 25 tax rises with workers and businesses, while allowing the richest to avoid taxes, keeping loopholes open and allowing the government to waste money.”

Her push for tax cuts overall was not his. policies to support this, but it was notable given Labour's traditional openness to tax increases and predictions that the UK's tax burden will rise to a 70-year high.

Ms Reeves and Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labor Party, do not plan to announce any new tax rises before the general election, a Labor source said.

Targeted tax rises

However, Ms Reeves Reeves again mentioned targeted tax increases promised by the Labor Party, such as making private schools pay VAT, ending non-domiciled tax status and forcing foreigners to pay more stamp duty when buying property in the UK.

About financial prudence. The shadow chancellor said: “Change will only be achieved through ironclad discipline.”

“Working people rightly expect nothing less. Because by playing fast and loose with public finances, you are putting family finances at risk.»

On waste, Ms Reeves has promised an independent investigation into how the HS2 budget has ballooned so much under the Tories.

She said: “I will not tolerate the disrespect for taxpayers' money that we have seen in recent years.

“I will not turn a blind eye to indecision, delays and incompetence. I will bring those responsible to justice.»

Ms Reeves has vowed to tighten ministerial code rules on the use of private jets, in a clear blow to the Prime Minister's travel habits.

She said: » We will fight Conservative ministers' obsession with private jets. What is Rishi Sunak so afraid of on his private jet? Meeting with voters?

The line builds on increasingly frequent attacks by senior Labor Party leaders on Mr Sunak's personal wealth and accusations that he is out of touch with voters.

Ms Reeves also said that «Labour will fight the next election on the economy.»

This reflects how confident her party is in challenging the Tories on economic governance, an area traditionally central to electoral attractiveness of conservatives.< /p>
