Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England, backed Rachel Reeves as the next chancellor in a surprise endorsement at the Labor Party conference.
The short video message was shown after Ms Reeves, Labour's shadow chancellor, gave a speech promising «iron discipline». on the public finances if the party wins the next general election.
Mr Carney, who was hand-picked for the bank job by then Tory chancellor George Osborne in 2013, said of Ms Reeves: «It's beyond time.» we bring her energy and ideas to life.»

Mr Carney said in his video: “Rachel Reeves is a serious economist. She started her career at the Bank of England, so she understands the big picture.
“But most importantly, she understands the economics of work, place and family. And, look, we have no time to put her energy and ideas into action.”
Mr Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of England by Mr Osborne in July 2013, three years after David Cameron's premiership, and remained in this post until March 2020.

Ms Reeves, who hopes to become Britain's first female chancellor, gave a conference speech in Liverpool to a packed audience.
On taxes, Ms Reeves said : “I didn’t come into politics to raise taxes for working people. Indeed, I want them to be lower.
“But the Tories have saddled 25 tax rises with workers and businesses, while allowing the richest to avoid taxes, keeping loopholes open and allowing the government to waste money.”

Ms Reeves has vowed to tighten ministerial code rules on the use of private jets, in a clear blow to the Prime Minister's travel habits.

The line builds on increasingly frequent attacks by senior Labor Party leaders on Mr Sunak's personal wealth and accusations that he is out of touch with voters.
Ms Reeves also said that «Labour will fight the next election on the economy.»
This reflects how confident her party is in challenging the Tories on economic governance, an area traditionally central to electoral attractiveness of conservatives.< /p>
