The Chevrolet Equinox EV electric crossover is a very important new product for General Motors Corporation, it has collected about 200,000 pre-orders, but production and sales will begin later than expected, and the minimum price turned out to be significantly higher than announced at the premiere.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV premiered in September last year, then GM expected to begin its production and sales this fall and promised that the crossover would cost about $30,000 in its basic configuration. It is clear that the word “about” gives the manufacturer some flexibility in determining the actual price: say, if it were $30,100, $30,499 or even $30,999, it is unlikely that anyone would be very surprised, but the starting price tag announced this week at $34,995 surprised the Americans, and it was also presented with the prefix “about.” GM promises to begin accepting full orders in November, and production of the Chevrolet Equinox EV at the Mexican GM plant in Ramos Arizpe will begin only in the first quarter of 2024 – accordingly, the first assembled copies will be shipped to customers somewhere by spring.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV is based on the younger version of the modular Ultium platform, the overall length of the crossover is 4836 mm, width – 1915 mm, height – 1613 mm, wheelbase – 2954 mm. Buyers will be offered a choice of single-engine front-wheel drive versions (213 hp and 328 Nm) and dual-engine all-wheel drive (total output – 294 hp and 469 Nm). The battery capacity has not been announced, we only know that the maximum range on a single charge will not be 300 miles (482 km), as promised a year ago, but 319 miles (513 km), and this is already an EPA-certified figure. The maximum battery charging power is 150 kW.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV will have five trim levels – 1LT, 2LT, 2RS, 3LT and 3RS. The 1LT trim level is considered the basic one, in which the crossover will cost “about $34,995” including delivery and excluding federal subsidies, but production of this trim level will begin only at the end of 2024, and the first to go into production and sale will be the 2RS Limited Edition trim level for 48 $995 combined with front-wheel drive, $53,395 combined with all-wheel drive. Prices for other configurations have not yet been announced.
The equipment of the Chevrolet Equinox EV 2RS Limited Edition will include a top-end 17.7-inch multimedia screen (11-inch in the base), a full set of electronic driver assistants up to the second-level Super Cruise autopilot, 21-inch wheels, heated steering wheel and front seats , contrasting interior trim, multi-color LED lighting and other amenities and entertainment. For comparison, let's say that the Tesla Model Y now costs $43,990 in the US. We would venture to assume that the minimum price of the Chevrolet Equinox EV was increased not so much for cost calculations, but for marketing reasons: at the time of the premiere, it was expected that the Equinox EV would be the cheapest electric car in the American Chevrolet range, but in July GM officially announced the new generation Chevrolet Bolt, it will be the most accessible “train”. Production of the first generation Chevrolet Bolt will end in December this year, the timing of the appearance of the second generation has not yet been announced, but the pause is unlikely to be long.
