The Russian government decree also states that the M-12 Moscow-Kazan expressway will be officially renamed M-12 » East.»
In the Russian Federation, one of the busiest free federal highways is the M-7 Volga, running from Moscow through Kazan to Ufa. The decision to build a toll backup for this road was made back in the last decade; work directly under the project started in 2018. The original route of the road runs from Moscow through Nizhny Novgorod to the capital of Tatarstan (several sections have been opened to date), but later it was proposed to extend the route, and work has already begun.
Earlier it became known that the M-12 toll highway under construction would go to Yekaterinburg, and now an official decision has been made to extend it to Tyumen. The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers said that the corresponding resolution of the Government of the Russian Federation was signed by its Chairman Mikhail Mishustin.
According to this document, the new toll highway should be renamed: the new official name is M-12 » East». This government decree consolidated the listed changes in the list of federal roads.
It is worth noting that now in the Russian Federation there is already a free highway “Vostok”, but it has not been completed (new sections have not appeared since 2002). The route of this road (index — A375) passes through the territory of the Far Eastern Federal District between Khabarovsk and Nakhodka. According to the plan, the length of this highway was to be 824 km. It is known that the highway in the Far Eastern Federal District will be given a different name, and the name “Vostok” will be assigned to M-12.
The Russian government explained that now in official documents the route of the M-12 highway should be referred to as “Moscow – Kazan – Yekaterinburg – Tyumen.” It is noted that the highway will include sections of the M-7 Volga roads (Kazan — Dyurtyuli, Dyurtyuli — Achit), R-242 (the section from the village of Achit to Yekaterinburg) and R-351 (Ekaterinburg — Tyumen).
The extension of the M-12 expressway will mainly consist of work on the reconstruction of existing roads, rather than the construction of new ones zero.» Therefore, the Russian government assumes that the new Vostok highway will be fully open to traffic in 2024.
Currently, traffic on the toll highway is carried out from Moscow to Arzamas (a city in Nizhny Novgorod area). According to the plan, traffic along the M-12 to Kazan should be opened in December of this year. Earlier, the cost of travel on the M-12 highway became known: car owners will have to spend 2.82 thousand rubles on the route from Moscow to Arzamas (415.5 km).
