The solemn ceremony of awarding the First Hermitage Prize, the winners of which were the artistic director-director of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev and the artistic director of the ballet troupe of the Mikhailovsky Theater Juan Ignacio Duato Barcia, took place at the State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), reports the correspondent.

“I would like to welcome our laureates in this hall: artistic director-director of the State Academic Mariinsky Theater Valery Abisalovich Gergiev and artistic director of the ballet troupe of the Mikhailovsky Theater Juan Ignacio Duato Barcia. The fruits of the labor of these people have already entered the golden fund of world culture. That’s why today they are our laureates, that’s why today we honor them and pay them deep respect,” said Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Forum Organizing Committee Tatyana Golikova at the award ceremony.
According to her, by creating the First Hermitage Prize, the government wanted to emphasize how important culture, history and continuity are for the country.
«It is a great honor for me to be here… The Mariinsky Theater and the Hermitage are no longer alone «We have been working for ten years to ensure that culture is culture. I want our prize to play a decisive role for culture. The Mariinsky Theater and the Hermitage together must go through another difficult period. We all have one common task,» Gergiev said when receiving the award.
The first Hermitage Prize “For achievements in the field of culture and art, preservation of cultural heritage and strengthening of international cultural dialogue” was established by the organizing committee of the cultural forum and the State Hermitage within the framework of the IX St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum.
