The Rainbow Bridge was closed on one of the busiest days of the year after a car reportedly on its way to a Kiss concert exploded on Wednesday.
Car crash on the US-Canada border that killed two people and injured a border guard. Nerves ahead of the busy Thanksgiving travel period do not count as terrorism, the FBI says.
The agency has turned over the investigation to local officials who are looking into why a luxury car sped toward a border checkpoint, crossed the median, went airborne, crashed into a building and exploded in a ball of fire.
CNN, citing FBI officials, reported that the car was a Bentley and the passengers were at least initially heading to Toronto for a Kiss concert that evening, although it had been canceled hours earlier. The driver is believed to be from Western New York.
The Rainbow Bridge crossing remains closed for the holiday on one of the busiest days of the year.
The Niagara Falls Police Department did not respond to a request for comment. The company previously said it would not identify the vehicle's occupants until it received «positive identification and next of kin notification.»
Amid fears of a possible terrorist threat Wednesday authorities closed three other checkpoints in the area — Lewiston, Whirlpool and Peace Bridge — and all have since reopened.
Despite some early media reports about the terrorist attack, the FBI said it had found no evidence of explosives, although that did not stop some elected officials from weighing in before investigators had fully examined the scene.
After incorrect reports on social media that the driver had entered through Canada, Mike Kelly, a Republican congressman from Pennsylvania, wrote that he was «warning of a surge in suspected terrorists coming across our northern border.»
Meanwhile, in Canada, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre demanded that the Prime Minister talk to Canadians after the first media reports of a “terrorist attack.”

Trudeau told Parliament he had been briefed and there were «many questions» surrounding the incident.

«Additional information may emerge, but preliminary investigations indicate there is no indication terrorists were involved in the horrific explosion that occurred here in western New York,» New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said. to reporters on Wednesday.
She added that the car was «burnt up» as a result of the accident.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said provincial police are «actively involved» in the investigation.
Given the scale and complexity of the disaster, police expect the investigation to take «some time.» The border crossing is not expected to open until Friday.
