In past generations, the Transporter was just one of the modifications of the German minibus, but the next generation, judging by spy photos, will become a completely different car .
Volkswagen Transporter is the first minibus in the history of the brand, as well as the second civilian car after the Beetle. Its first production model, designated T1, was presented at the end of 1949. Today, the sixth generation of the model with the T6 index, which has been produced since 2015, is already on the assembly line. The summer of the year before last saw the premiere of the T7 model, which is available only in passenger versions of the Caravelle and Multivan. As for the cargo-passenger modification of the Transporter, technically it will have nothing in common with them.

In accordance with the agreement between Volkswagen and Ford, the latter is responsible for the development of the new generation Transporter. Judging by recently released spy photos, the new product will be a modified version of the Ford Transit Custom model, which premiered in September last year. The main difference between the Transporter will be the original design of the front part, which has something in common with the T7. Similar horizontal headlights will appear here, united by a jumper, and there will also be original elements: the bumper will get its own design, and in its upper part there will be a trapezoidal radiator grille. Volkswagen will also have its own hood and front fenders. The sides will hardly differ from the Ford original, while the main update at the rear will be the lights with the original LED light graphics.

As already mentioned, the new Transporter will have a common platform with the latest generation Transit Custom. Most likely, it will also receive two wheelbase options and a couple of roof height options — standard and high. They will have a common engine range: Ford is equipped with a new generation EcoBlue diesel engine with 110, 136, 150 or 170 hp. The transmission used is a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission. Ford also has a rechargeable hybrid version (a 2.5 petrol engine paired with an electric motor) and an all-electric version of the E-Transit Custom with a single electric motor with a power of 136 or 217 hp, the maximum range without recharging is 380 km in the WLTP cycle.
