Netflix opened its Pandora's box – and all sorts of strange information flew out. On The streamer unveiled its most detailed breakdown of its top-rated shows this week, releasing viewership data collected for the first half of 2023. The countdown of the most-watched series for the first half of the year was full of surprises – especially the number one spot of the completely obscure Night Agent. Here's the list the most popular hits (by hours watched) until the end of June.

    1. Night Agent

Netflix's biggest hit (first half) of 2023 is a fast-paced thriller starring Gabriel Basso as an FBI agent who works at the White House as a “night telephone operator” – a low-key position that involves staffing a help desk after hours. for ghosts. This phone never actually rings. But in the Netflix hit, it does, leading to a conspiracy that leads straight to the Oval Office. Or, in the words of showrunner Sean Ryan: “Imagine all the president’s men doing car chases.” He added: “If you like Jack Ryan books, Jack Reacher books, if you like Bourne Identity stuff, if you want political intrigue, then Night Agent is for you.”

    2. Ginny & Georgia

Nobody watches trash TV like Netflix, and this sitcom is fast food for the brain, cooked to perfection. Georgia (Brianne Howey), a 30-year-old single mother with hippie tendencies and a tough upbringing, is matched by Ginny (Antonia Gentry), her outspoken 15-year-old daughter. Think Jennifer Saunders' Edina and Julia Sawalha's Saffy in Absolutely Fabulous. The fish-out-of-water storyline heightens generational conflict as a series of unlikely events forces mother and daughter to move from blue-collar Texas to genteel Massachusetts. Rolling Stone described Ginny & Georgia as ChatGPT is writing a sitcom that hits a range of demographics with pinpoint accuracy. Ginny's Teenage Adventures falls into the coming-of-age high school genre. Meanwhile, the ups and downs of the mother-daughter relationship mark this as a spiritual sequel/shameless ripoff of Gilmore Girls.

Forget K-Pop; It was through television dramas that South Korea became a global powerhouse. And forget about the game “Squids”. One of the biggest exports of 2023 is Glory, a cold morality play about revenge and about a former bullying victim who exacts revenge on her opponents by qualifying as a teacher and then taking responsibility for the child of the main bully. Based on a true story, the film is a chilling film that explores trauma, revenge and class tensions in Korea.

    4. Wednesday

Jenna Ortega became an instant Gen Z icon when she turned the deadpan anti-heroine of The Addams Family Wednesday into a 21-year-old goth th century. Meanwhile, director Tim Burton joined the zeitgeist by placing the action firmly in the trendy “Dark Academia” genre, sending the environment to Nevermore Academy, aka emo Hogwarts.

Wednesday 5. Queen Charlotte: The Bridgerton Story

Showrunner supremo Shonda Rhimes has given Netflix one of its biggest hits with Regency-era The Bridgertons. With a multi-ethnic cast and a dancefloor-ready soundtrack, Bridgerton is a show about the past rooted in the present. The same can be said for the spin-off Queen Charlotte, which tells the origin story of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the future wife of George III. Diversity has always been one of Rhimes' core values. Queen Charlotte approaches this concept from a new perspective, showing us an 18th-century Britain in which people of all nationalities are treated equally and where race is not a barrier to social progress.

The main talking point in the latest episode of the psychological thriller You was Penn Badgley, who announced that he will no longer do sex scenes because he is now married. This statement was controversial. But that did little to dampen the popularity of You, in which Badgley plays an obsessive former bookstore manager who develops a deadly infatuation with a series of unattainable women. In Season 4, work on the formula by moving to London and putting Joe on the trail of a killer.

A feminist take on Narcos, the Mexican drama was a big hit in the Spanish-speaking world but went global when Netflix co-produced a second series. It tells the story of Teresa Mendoza, a naive young woman from Mexico whose pilot boyfriend is executed by the cartel. Having fled to Spain, she again turns into a ruthless bandit. The three subsequent episodes chronicle her rise in the criminal world and the personal conflicts she experiences along the way.

Lord of the Flies meets The OC in a coming-of-age drama about two groups of teenagers on a string of islands off the coast of North Carolina where lost gold is said to be kept. Children of blue-collar workers are called “Pogs” and blue-blooded children are called “Weirdos.” The sunny palette and hazy cinematography give the series the air of an advertisement for a high-end fragrance, and the treasure hunt plot is reminiscent of Tomb Raider and the Uncharted video games.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back – and having a great time as former CIA agent Luke Bruner, who discovers that his daughter Emma (Monica Barbaro) is also a black ops specialist.
