    New substances for the treatment of influenza have been proposed in Russia

    MOSCOW, December 15 New chemical compounds that could become the basis for the development of a medicine against influenza type A (H1N1) were synthesized by UrFU scientists as part of a scientific group. According to the researchers, the new compounds selectively target the virus and presumably have no side effects. The results are presented in Chemistry.
    The university explained that influenza is caused by viruses of types A, B and C. The infection has a tendency to mutations, epidemic spread, and affects all age groups of the population in different geographical conditions. Influenza virus type A is the most common and causes a number of major pandemics.
    In this regard, the search for new antiviral agents, including direct antiviral drugs based on small molecules, is extremely relevant.

    “As a result of the initial screening against the influenza A virus, compounds with pronounced and high antiviral activity were found. An active compound may be of interest for promotion into medical practice as an antiviral agent if it combines effectiveness against the virus with low toxicity for a living organism,” said Svetlana Kotovskaya, senior researcher at the problem laboratory of physiologically active substances at UrFU.

    She added that to assess the ratio of the antiviral activity of a drug substance in relation to its toxicity to the body, there is a special indicator – the selectivity index. The higher the value of this index, the more actively the active substance fights the virus, and the less side effects it exhibits.

    “Some of the compounds we studied have a selectivity index from 40 to 188. According to the guidelines of the Russian Ministry of Health, the substance is of interest for its subsequent study and promotion in case the value of the selectivity index is more than 10,” explained Kotovskaya.

    Thus, the compounds found are of interest for further study in animals, and in case of positive results, for subsequent preclinical and clinical study with the aim of advancing into medical practice, the specialist concluded.
