MOSCOW, December 24Fraudsters are massively creating fake websites supposedly for watching the series “The Boy’s Word” — almost 400 such resources have appeared since November 1, and through them, attackers are trying to obtain personal data from users and arrange a hidden subscription, the Bi.Zone company said.
«From November 1 to December 20, scammers registered 398 domains for watching the series «The Boy's Word.» Attackers use popular topics to attract attention to the sites they have created, through which they can, unnoticed by the user, sign up for a weekly subscription to view content, as well as steal personal data. This includes full name, phone numbers, banking information,» the experts noted.
The scheme works quite simply: sites contain an offer to watch all the episodes for free, but after watching 10-30 seconds of the episode a pop-up window appears with an offer to pay for a subscription to day for a small amount. To do this, the user is redirected to a third-party site.
If he makes a payment, then unbeknownst to him, a weekly subscription worth 340 rubles is issued, which is automatically renewed upon expiration. However, after payment, access to the series does not open. It is noteworthy that a quarter of the domains for illegitimate viewing of the series are registered by the same owner.
«To increase the effectiveness of fraudulent schemes, attackers need to attract the attention of as large an audience as possible. Therefore, they always follow trends and use the most resonant topics in deception schemes. In this case, 398 fraudulent sites were registered — for one topic this is a high figure» ,” said Evgeniy Voloshin, director of the company’s security analysis and anti-fraud department.
