MOSCOW, January 1 The national teams of Norway and Poland won victories in matches of the group stage of the United Cup in Australia, the prize fund of which is $10 million.
In the Group F meeting, the Norwegian team beat the Croats with a score of 2-1. Norwegian Kasper Ruud beat Borna Coric (6:4, 6:1), and Croatian Donna Vekic defeated Malene Helgo (7:5, 3:6, 6:3). In the doubles match, Ruud and Ulrikke Eikeri prevailed over Vekic and Ivan Dodig (6:2, 3:6, 10:7).
In Group A, the Polish team beat the Spanish team with a score of 2-1 and reached the quarterfinals of the tournament. Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina beat Hubert Hurkacz (3:6, 6:3, 6:4), and Poland's Iga Szwiatek defeated Sara Sorribes-Tormo (6:2, 6:1). In the doubles match, Swiatek and Hurkacz were stronger than Sorribes-Tormo and Davidovich-Fokina (6:0, 6:0). The Poles' opponents in the first round of the playoffs will be determined later.
United Cup runs from December 29 to January 7. The winner of the first tournament in 2023 was the US team. The Russian team is not invited to participate in the tournament.
