DONETSK, January 3 Ukrainian troops fired 17 NATO shells of 155 mm caliber at the Petrovsky district of Donetsk, Gorlovka and Makeevka, the representative office reports DPR at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine (JCCC).
“Shelling was recorded from the Ukrainian Armed Forces (armed formations of Ukraine – ed.) in the direction: 17.05 – the settlement of Kurakhovka – the city of Donetsk (Petrovsky district): three shells of 155 mm caliber were fired; 17.45 – the settlement of Dzerzhinsk – the settlement of Gorlovka (Nikitovsky district) : four shells of 155 mm caliber were fired; 18.05 – the settlement of Arkhangelskoye – the settlement of Makeevka (Chervonogvardeysky district): four shells of 155 millimeters caliber were fired,” says the representative’s messages on the Telegram channel.
At 18.15, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continued shelling the Petrovsky district of Donetsk and Makeyevka, firing a total of six shells from NATO artillery at them. At 16.55, Ukrainian troops opened fire on Gorlovka, firing three 152-millimeter shells into the city.
Petrovsky district is located on the western outskirts of Donetsk, it is the most distant part of the city from the center. Since 2014, when the DPR declared independence from Kyiv, this area has regularly come under fire from Ukrainian security forces.
Makeevka is a satellite city of Donetsk, adjacent to it from the northeast. In 2014, the population of Makeyevka numbered about 350 thousand people. Chervonogvardeisky district is located in the western part of the city.
Gorlovka is located 50 kilometers north of Donetsk, the city is home to the Stirol chemical concern and coal mining enterprises. This is one of the largest populated areas of the DPR; before the start of the conflict in Donbass, the population of Gorlovka numbered more than 250 thousand people.
155mm artillery is used by NATO countries. The United States supplied Ukraine with long-range howitzers M777 of 155 mm caliber, Ukrainian troops are actively using them to shell the cities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics. Also, the Ukrainian troops were supplied with German PzH 2000 self-propelled artillery mounts, Polish Krab self-propelled guns and French CAESAR self-propelled guns using shells of this caliber.
