GAZ is preparing to revive the Volga: the new product will retain the deer logo

Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov spoke a little about the design of the future car of the Russian brand.

The Volga today is part of Russian automotive history: back in 2009, the last copy of the then current GAZ-31105 model rolled off the assembly line of the Gorky Automobile Plant; and in 2010, the career of the Volga Cyber, which was a clone of the Chrysler Sebring, ended. Later, the manufacturer returned more than once to the project of developing a new Volga, but the company never got around to implementing it. By the way, one of the options for the potential appearance of such a Russian new product was proposed several years ago by the designer Kolesa.ru.

Now the GAZ Group is seriously planning to start producing cars, which will be given the name Volga. According to the plan, the new product should enter the assembly line of the Gorky Automobile Plant in 2024. It is expected that, as in the case of the revived Moskvich, this model will be the result of badge engineering of a certain Chinese car. The Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Denis Manturov, previously said that Volgas will return to the Russian car market.

It is still not reported which company will become the technology partner in the implementation of the new Volga project. At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, quoted by TASS, noted that now all agreements are at the final stage of discussion. He added that preparatory work had been going on since May last year, so production of the new Volga should start around mid-2024.

Denis Manturov also spoke a little about what the design of the revived Volga would turn out to be. According to him, the car will have an “absolutely modern look,” while the minister emphasized that the radiator grille of the new product will be similar in design to the “legendary Volga.” He also noted that the future car will have a recognizable brand name — with a deer.

It is known that the production of Volga cars will be established at the facilities of the plant located in Nizhny Novgorod. Until a technology partner has been named, one can only guess which model will become the basis for the future new product of the Russian brand. Most likely, it will be some modern “celestial” model belonging to the business class segment.

Thus, the current Moskvich 3 crossover is based on the JAC JS4 SUV, and the Moskvich 6 liftback is based on Sehol Yao (this is one of the varieties of the JAC J7). Production of both models is established at the capital's automobile plant, which previously belonged to the French group Renault.

By the way, this year the Moskvich model range has been replenished with another new product, which will receive a “five” as an index . The first official teaser of this car was released last month; it is known that it will be based on the Sehol X6 SUV (the model is based on the JAC Refine S5), presented on the domestic market in 2022.
