Ivan Toney, Calvin Phillips and Conor Gallagher are among the top targets this window
The transfer window opened on January 1, giving clubs across Europe will have the opportunity to strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season.
Telegraph Sport football experts assess who needs what in the Premier League and which players could leave.
Arsenal · Aston Villa · Bournemouth · Brentford · Brighton · Burnley · Chelsea · Crystal Palace · Everton · Fulham · Liverpool · Luton · Manchester City · Manchester United · Newcastle · Nottingham Forest · Sheffield United · Tottenham · West Ham · Wolves< /p> Arsenal
What do they need? In the short term, defenders. Jurrien Timber is absent due to injury and Takehiro Tomiyasu is heading to the Asian Cup with Japan. In the future — another defensive midfielder. Another striker option — a traditional striker or versatile winger — is also on the transfer list.
Who could they sign? It depends on how quickly the injured players recover and whether there is serious interest in any of their secondary players. Finances are relatively tight, as evidenced by the fact that they had to sign David Rye as an initial loan in the summer.
Who could they sell? A big offer for Aaron Ramsdale could tempt Arsenal. Eddie Nketiah is another player who could command a significant fee. If sold, both must be replaced. Thomas Partey's future remains uncertain.

Aston Villa
What do they want? Villa will target a new striker and right-back, perhaps with a different attacking option. Unai Emery wants competition from Matty Cash and more firepower to help Ollie Watkins. Villa could also opt for a new goalkeeper as Emiliano Martinez's injury leaves them short-handed.
Who could they sign? They have some spending room but their hopes of signing Emery's long-term target Nico Williams are over after the striker signed a new contract with Athletic Bilbao. A surprise target could be RB Leipzig striker Yannick Eduardo.
Who could they sell? Interest in striker John Durant is growing amid alleged behind-the-scenes tensions with Emery. Villa will also consider leaving [permanently or on loan] Bertrand Traore, Calum Chambers and Tim Irogbunam.

What do they need? The club may be looking at a new left-back due to injury problems in the position. Lloyd Kelly has been missing since early December and the club is also without Hungary international Milos Kerkez, one of those arriving as part of a big summer spending programme. If a striker option were available, the club might also select him, but only at the right price.
Who could they sign? Andoni Iraola oversaw a remarkable transformation at the club as his methods took hold among the players in November and December. He said big changes were unlikely unless players left. Around £100 million was invested in commissions over the summer.
Who could they sell? One possible departure if Bournemouth can get a replacement could be striker Kieffer Moore. He didn't start in the league all season. The first choice for this position, Dominic Solanke, has already scored 12 league goals and is naturally attracting interest. However, the club is well protected with Solanke under contract until 2027.

Brentford
What do they need? A new striker is on Brentford's radar, although Ivan Toney will return to action in the coming weeks. Brian Mbeumo has been out for several months and Kevin Sade has been injured since September. Brentford are also missing a defender.
Who could they sign? Telegraph Sport reported in December that Brentford were interested in signing US international Brandon Vazquez from Cincinnati. In the summer they tried to buy PSV winger Johan Bakayoko for a club record sum, but now he is unavailable to them.
Who could they sell? There is a big question mark over Tony, but Brentford have no intention of letting him leave the club in January. Any interested club (Chelsea perhaps?) would have to make a huge offer to get him now. A summer move with more money is much more likely.
Sam Dean
Brighton
What do they need? Brighton's injury list is painfully long. They are particularly short on wingers and defenders, with Solly March, Ansu Fati, Julio Enciso and Joel Veltman all struggling with long-term problems. Kaoru Mitoma and Simon Adingra are also out now.
Who could they sign? This is not an easy task. Brighton are currently short of strikers but will be well stocked when injured players return. Hoffenheim's Maximilian Bayer and Leeds United's Crisencio Summerville have been linked, but it should be noted that Brighton don't usually like to do business in January.
Who could they sell? Brighton are unable to sell any of their regular first team players. Not only because of their injury list, but also because of their European commitments. As per club policy, they try to avoid large sales during the winter window.

What do they need? Vincent Kompany still lacks a consistent scorer and may look to strengthen his attack. Burnley could also use some reinforcements in central midfield and left back.
Who could they sign? Having spent £90m last summer and with relegation a real threat, Burnley are not expected to spend much in January and are likely to target players with resale value again. The company could be inquiring about Jan Maatsen after it failed to sell the left-back to Chelsea for £31m in the summer window and was also linked with Marseille midfielder Pape Gueye.
< strong>Who could they sell? Josh Brownhill remains of interest to Wolves but Burnley are expected to offer a 12-month extension to his existing contract, which expires at the end of the season. Marginal players such as CJ Egan-Riley and Darko Churlinov may leave, while others such as Aro Muric and Anass Zarouri may seek more regular playing time elsewhere.
James Ducker
Chelsea
What do they need? The worst kept secret in football is that Chelsea need a striker who can regularly put the ball in the back of the net, but that is easier said than done. With Reece James out for four months, Mark Cucurella recovering from surgery and playing Levi Colville as a makeshift left-back for much of the season, the club could also consider signing a new defender, although Ben Chilwell is already returning.
Who could they sign? Given Chelsea's desperation to land a top striker, Chelsea have already been linked with just about every name possible. Mauricio Pochettino's best choice would be Victor Osimhen, although the Nigerian recently signed a new contract with Napoli and is unlikely to leave before the summer 2024 transfer window. Ivan Toney doesn't fit Chelsea's transfer philosophy and it remains to be seen whether the club would be willing to give that up to make an offer for the Brentford star.
Who could they sell? Chelsea will listen to offers for defenders Trevo Chalobah and Jan Maatsen, while the club could receive interest in strikers Noni Madueka and Armando Broja, who could be considering their future if Chelsea do sign a new striker. Conor Gallagher's future remains uncertain with 18 months left on his contract.
Matt Lowe
Crystal Palace
What do they need? Cheik Doucoure's injury in November was a huge blow for Roy Hodgson's side. The club will look for a solution in this situation, but only if it is correct. Palace have always gone with the wind when it comes to recruiting a lean squad and are unlikely to pursue players who could be a burden down the line. They will also look at a defender, Joel Ward is also injured.
Who could they sign? Many clubs looking to sign the midfielder will consider a loan move for Kalvin Phillips, although Palace will have to line up for the Manchester City and England international. The club had also hoped to sign Lewis Hall on loan from Chelsea in the summer, but he instead moved to Newcastle on an agreement to buy. Players like Phillips or former loanee Conor Gallagher, who Chelsea could make available, feel unavailable to Palace at the moment.
Who could they sell? Palace have a tight squad with little room to manoeuvre. They signed their best players, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise, to long-term contracts. The academy continues to produce a decent number of players for the main squad. James Tomkins and Jan Riedewald played infrequently for the first team when fit. Despite this, they have experienced cover.
Sam Wallace
Everton
What do they need? The squad is more balanced, but Sean Dyche remains easy to attack and vulnerable to injury in midfield and at full-back. He will push for upgrades in all positions when the money is available. Not yet.
Who could they sign? Given the rules of profit and sustainability, don't expect Everton to go beyond the loan. Having already been punished by the Premier League for cost overruns, no top-flight club would tread so carefully.
Who could they sell? Everton have valuable assets in Jordan Pickford and Amadou Onana, but it is unlikely that they will weaken their squad unless finances require it. Andre Gomes' recent return from injury could spark interest, but only if Dyche can replace him.
Chris Bascombe
Fulham
What do they need? They still need a replacement for Aleksandar Mitrovic after he left for Saudi Arabia, even if Raul Jimenez has regained his touch. Much will depend on whether Joao Palinha makes the move, which will mean he will need a holding midfielder.
Who could they sign? Fluminense midfielder Andre is their first choice if Paligna leaves. The 22-year-old has not yet played outside of Brazil, but has already played for the national team. Feyenoord striker Santiago Jimenez is top of Fulham's list but his asking price is too high for a deal to be done.
Who could they sell to? Bayern Munich remain interested in Palinha despite him signing a new contract — with no release clause — after his summer move fell through. Carlos Vinicius has attracted interest from abroad and Anthony Robinson has suitors elsewhere, but Fulham will be desperate to keep hold of him.
Mike McGrath

What do they want? Joel Matip's long-term injury and the fact that his contract expires this summer means Liverpool are looking at centre-backs. The biggest question is whether they will sign him now or before next season. Unless an opportunity suddenly arises, they tend to wait.
Who could they sign? Left-sided central midfielders capable of emergency performance at full-back are hardly worth a dime. That's why Manchester City signed Josko Guardiola, who Liverpool had been tracking before his mega-price move to Aitihad. As things stand, they are unlikely to take on new staff in January.
Who could they sell? Fabio Carvalho was allowed to go on loan to RB Leipzig last summer. This move did not work and it was withdrawn. Liverpool's plan has been to give the youngster a fresh start ahead of next season, but another loan deal looks most likely in the short term.
Chris Bascombe
Luton Town
< Strong>What do they need? Thirteen players were brought in last summer, breaking the transfer record multiple times, despite spending less than £10 million in total, and manager Rob Edwards has already said there won't be «big, big changes» — and why should there be? Luton were brilliant and gave themselves a chance to survive. That being said, a new central midfielder is likely needed given the absence of Tom Lockyer, although there is the possibility of another holding midfielder coming in.
Who could they sign? Luton have been linked with a move for 19-year-old Ecuadorian defensive midfielder Oscar Zambrano, who plays for LDU Quito, for a mooted £5.5 million that would be a club record. The club were very careful with their finances — partly because they carefully prepared the budget for the relegation and the construction of the new stadium. Expect Andros Townsend, whose contract runs until January, to agree a new long-term deal while they look at the credit market.
Who could they sell? It is unlikely that Luton will sell anyone. There was some discussion about whether Albert Sambi Lokonga's loan deal with Arsenal would be cancelled, but the midfielder has returned to the team. There is absolutely no pressure to sell, and Edwards has already said he expects to continue with what he has. Several players such as Reece Burke, Cauley Woodrow and Mads Andersen are returning from injury.

Manchester City
What do they need? Kevin De Bruyne's return after a four-and-a-half month layoff is more significant than any potential arrival. Quality cover for Rodri is an obvious requirement, especially with Kalvin Phillips likely to be in his way, but finding a player of the required quality in the winter window is easier said than done.
Who could they sign? City sign Argentine Under-17 World Cup star Claudio Echeverri for £22 million, which will see the attacking midfielder go on loan to River Plate immediately, similar to what happened with Julián Alvarez two years ago.< /p>< p>Who could they sell to? Phillips is expected to leave in search of regular football, with Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain leading the race for the England midfielder, who has made just two appearances for City since joining from Leeds United for £45 million 18 months ago. .
James Ducker
Manchester United
What do they need?A new director of football is a priority for new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe as Ineos prepares to overhaul recruitment at Old Trafford after years of failed transfers.
Who could they sign? United are set to review any potential acquisitions of Ineos while a deal for a 29 per cent stake in the club awaits approval, but with money limited under Premier League profit and sustainability rules, manager Erik ten Hag could be limited a lease signing or two. . United are still missing an experienced centre-forward and are lacking in many areas, including a central midfielder and a full-back.
Who could they sell? Jadon Sancho could be the biggest departure yet, with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and RB Leipzig keeping tabs on the English winger, who has been ousted by Ten Hag since September. Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial are among the players whose contracts expire at the end of the season and who will be free to mix with foreign fans from January 1. There are also doubts over Casemiro's future.
James Ducker
Newcastle United
What do they need? In an ideal world, they would like to sign a right winger and a defensive midfielder. Another goalkeeper is not out of the question, but they are severely constrained by profit and sustainability rules, meaning loans are being explored before permanent deals.
Who could they sign? Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips is a long-term target and is available on loan. Free agent goalkeeper David De Gea might be on their minds. Finding a striker is much more difficult and Newcastle are reluctant to spend big.
Who could they sell? There is no desire to sell one of the three jewels of the crown — Bruno Guimarães, Alexander Isak and Sven Botman, and there is no interest in anyone else. However, there is a lot of deadwood in the team to cut down, including the likes of Matt Ritchie, Mark Gillespie, Paul Dummett and Javier Manquillo.
Luke Edwards

What do they need? Nuno Espirito Santo is still assessing his squad and the focus is on reducing numbers, which is not surprising after 43 transfers since Forest's promotion. However, there is a very high likelihood of a new goalkeeper coming in, given the problems with the current two — Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos. Following Taiwo Awoniyi's injury, a new striker could be a likely option, while another striker could be brought in to suit Nuno's counter-attacking style.
Who could they sign? David De Gea is a dream choice for Forest fans, especially given the link with Jorge Mendes, but it is unclear whether this is possible. Forests are constrained by spending restrictions and there is little chance of large sums of money being spent unless an exit is made.
Who could they sell to? Forest are always busy with transfer windows, but this time it will be more about players leaving the club. There is a very good chance that Andrei Santos, Serge Aurier, Scott McKenna, Cheikhou Kouyaté, Felipe and Ethan Horvath could all leave before the end of the window.
John Percy
Sheffield United
What do they need? Chris Wilder could use a few signings — perhaps from the loan market — to freshen up their bid for survival. They have shown their competitiveness in most matches but would welcome a player with X-factor in attack or Wes Foderingham's rival in goal.
Who could they sign? They have been linked with Roberto Firmino as he remains unavailable for Saudi Arabia, although his wages mean a loan to another SPL club would be more likely. Any Premier League player available on loan will be on their radar.
Who could they sell to? On-loan Luke Thomas could return to Leicester City, opening up space to sign a Premier League deal until the end of the season. Benny Traore has not featured for the last month or so and could leave if a buyer is found.
Mike McGrath
Tottenham
What do they need? Ange Postecoglou is prioritizing a new centre-back and has made it clear that with Christian Romero sidelined again, he would like Tottenham to start doing their thing in that area sooner rather than later. In an ideal world, Postecoglou would also like to have a new striker and a new number eight, but it remains to be seen whether all of that can be done in January.
Who could they do? sign? Tottenham are keeping an eye on Genoa's Radu Dragusin, although the Italian club claim the defender is in line for a new contract and admire Jean-Clair Todibo, who has been in superb form at Nice, but the French club are reluctant to let him go in January. . Jota, who played for Postecoglou at Celtic, could come on the wing while Spurs are interested in Chelsea's Conor Gallagher but may not be ready to justify their London rivals' £45-50m valuation.
Who could they sell to? Midfielders Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who was interested in Juventus and Napoli, and Oliver Skipp could be released, but this may well depend on income and injury. Richarlison has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, but the Brazilian's recent good form could keep him at Tottenham beyond the January transfer window. Hugo Lloris has already signed an agreement to join Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer.
Matt Lowe

What do they need need to? A little. West Ham are in good form — certainly much better than last year — and are not expected to have a busy January. The priority appears to be a left winger, which will allow Lucas Paquete to play more centrally. At some point they will need a new centre-forward and another holding midfielder, although they could choose a centre-back depending on who leaves.
Who could they sign? Juventus winger Filip Kostic has been a long-term target, while the Italian club's other winger, Samuel Ealing Junior, could be of interest and is expected to leave the club. West Ham are known admirers of Bournemouth's Dominic Solanke (although he is unlikely to join West Ham), as well as Paris Saint-Germain's Hugo Ekiteike and Arsenal's Reiss Nelson. There are concerns about profit rules and sustainability, so signings must be balanced with sales. Could they switch to Manchester United's Jadon Sancho?
Who could they sell? Said Benrahma appears to be on his way after failing to convince David Moyes. Likewise, Maxwell Cornet, hampered by injury, has not made much of an impact and although Pablo Fornals recently extended his contract, it is understood this was partly to protect his transfer value and he could also leave. However, the loss of Mohamed Kudus at the Africa Cup of Nations could limit sales, but defender Thilo Kehrer is available.
Jason Burt
Wolves
What do they need? ? It seems to be a recurring theme from many of Wolves' previous transfer windows, but a proven number nine and winger remain top priorities. Wolves desperately need a poacher to miss the plethora of chances they are creating while they only have Pedro Neto as their go-to striker.
Who could they sign? Wolves have already missed Viktoria Pilsen striker Rafiu Durosinmi, who moved to Eintracht Frankfurt, due to problems related to the player's agents' fees. They are still looking for a striker and could reconsider the deal for Southampton's Che Adams. Danny Ings to West Ham has been discussed in previous windows, but a move is now unlikely. However, funds are limited and credit transactions are most likely.
Who could they sell to? After selling more than £140 million worth of talent in the summer, Wolves are desperate to avoid the departure of their new first-team stars. Fabio Silva has already joined Rangers on loan, while fringe players Jonny Otto could leave permanently and Sasha Kalajdzic and Joe Hodge could go on loan.
