A drug has been developed in Russia to fill dangerous vascular plexuses

NOVOSIBIRSK, January 9Siberian scientists together with surgeons from the National Medical Research Center named after Academician E.N. Meshalkin of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation have developed a polymer to fill dangerous plexuses of blood vessels; it will be better than foreign analogues, the publication of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences “Science in Siberia” reported on Tuesday.
Doctors use embolisates to prevent vascular rupture and stop clots in capillary pathological vessels (malformations). Such pathologies are dangerous with the ever-present risk that blood vessels will burst, which can lead to internal hemorrhage and stroke. Vessels in which cholesterol plaques are deposited are also dangerous. The greatest difficulty is caused by operations related to the relief of cerebral vascular pathologies.

“We cooperate with neurosurgeons from the Meshalkin clinic, they asked us to help with radiopaque embolisates. There are only two imported analogues on the market, and now, due to sanctions, there is a shortage of them in Russia, so we decided to try to make our own,” the message reads. words of a researcher at the laboratory of pharmacological research at the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry named after. N. N. Vorozhtsov SB RAS (NIOC SB RAS), director of the Medin company Arkady Bryzgalov.

Senior researcher at the Research Institute of Organic Chemistry SB RAS Inna Shundrina explained: the human circulatory system is designed in such a way that there are always workarounds. Therefore, a dangerous vessel can be blocked; blood will not flow there, but will go through other vessels. Embolization is one of the most convenient methods, since surgeons do not always have the opportunity to perform surgery to remove malformations. They may be located in hard-to-reach places, be very small, or the person may have contraindications.
The synthesis of the required polymer was carried out by employees of the Laboratory of Electrochemically Active Compounds and Materials of the Research Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Scientists conducted research on mini-pigs, the diameter of whose vessels is close to that of a human.

Shundrina explained that one of the most important indicators of the embolizate is viscosity and luminosity. Viscosity is selected for different vessel diameters. Luminosity is needed so that the surgeon can see how the polymer passes into the vessel and how it moves along it. One of the imported embolisates is based on the toxic metal tantalum, the second contains iodine. It was on its basis that Russian scientists made their own, while ridding the drug of unnecessary impurities.
“Now the researchers have practically developed the final version of the embolisate, it satisfied all the surgeons. As soon as the scientists finish the experiments on mini-pigs, the researchers are waiting for the last stage, which should be completed in 2024 – packaging, testing the ability of the drug to have a toxic effect on the human body and clinical trials,” the publication reports. It is planned that within a year the Medin production company will begin producing domestic embolisates – purer in composition than imported ones and much cheaper in cost.
