CBS News: a group of teenagers were shot leaving a school in downtown Chicago
Two teenage classmates died in a shooting in downtown Chicago. The children were ambushed at the exit from Innovations High School. This was reported by the CBS television company.
Chicago Police Deputy Chief John Hayne said the shooting began when a group of six students left the school. At that moment, two cars drove up to the building — a dark sedan and an SUV. One of the shooters started firing from the car. Then the unknown people got out of the cars and continued to shoot at the teenagers who were trying to escape.
As a result, a 17-year-old boy was wounded in the chest and thigh, and another 16-year-old in the chest. They tried to provide assistance at the scene of the shooting, managed to load them into ambulances and take them to the hospital, where the teenagers died. The police noted that one of the bullets hit the coat sleeve of a woman passing by, miraculously not hitting her.
CBS notes that the intersection where the shooting occurred is located in the very center of Chicago, next to several businesses, restaurants and a busy train station, and just two blocks from Millennium Park, one of the major tourist attractions. The attack took place during the lunch hour, when the area is always crowded with people.
The shooters tried to escape. The search for them is underway. The streets closest to the scene of the emergency are blocked. The police said that this is the first high-profile crime in the area, but they promised to do everything to ensure that the neighborhood remains safe and respectable.
