MOSCOW, January 29 The Moscow City Court refused to satisfy the defense’s complaint and release blogger and business coach Ayaz Shabutdinov, accused of major fraud, from pre-trial detention, a correspondent from the courtroom reports.
“The decision of the Tagansky Court of Moscow is left unchanged, the lawyers’ complaints are not satisfied,” the judge announced the decision.
Lawyers still consider the decision of the court of first instance to be illegal and unfounded and insist on mitigating the preventive measure of house arrest or posting bail. Defender Kaloy Akhilgov clarified that the court itself can set bail for the amount it wishes.
“Tens of thousands (of people — ed.) have undergone training. This is a normal, natural statistic when someone is dissatisfied with the training and someone’s money is returned, or not returned if the court sided with the company,” Akhilgov said.
The lawyers also noted that Shabutdinov’s company “Like Center” is not a “fly-by-night” company and all of its courses were provided on the basis of a license, in including the Ministry of Education.
“I don’t see any risks of putting me under house arrest. I could work for the benefit of our clients,” Shabutdinov said, speaking via video link.
In the case, 15 people were recognized as victims, more than 25 more applications are being verified, an investigator reported in December in the Tagansky Court of Moscow during the consideration of a petition to extend the arrest.
The business coach and founder of Like Center was charged under Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud committed by an organized group on an especially large scale). According to investigators, Shabutdinov created a false impression among citizens about the possibility of building a highly profitable business thanks to his educational programs. He did not admit guilt.
Another person involved is the general director of the company that sells training courses, Vasily Alekseev, he is wanted.
