On Saturday, personal competitions of the Russian Championship were held in Moscow jumping among skaters. Children won both men and women: 14-year-old Arseniy Fedotov and 12-year-old Margarita Bazylyuk. A sensation occurred in the pairs.
Silver BirthdayThe Russian championship in jumping began with the wrestling of sports pairs. Although in the quarterfinals there was no rivalry as such: those seeded higher at the end of the qualifications turned out to be noticeably stronger than their competitors. But in the semi-finals there was a sensation. The champions of Russia and the first rated couple of the current tournament, namely Anastasia Mishina and Alexander Gallyamov, made a noticeable blot on the ejection, and their opponents Elizaveta Osokina and Artem Gritsaenko took advantage of this, gaining a few tenths of a point more with pure elements.
The opponents of the unexpected finalists in the decisive round were Alexandra Boykova and Dmitry Kozlovsky, who had not made any mistakes at all until this stage. Osokina and Gritsaenko performed first and performed their elements not quite perfectly — the cascade came out with a blot. The former European champions would have had enough to win the usual set without any risk, but Boykova, who turned 22 on Saturday, suddenly made a mistake on a jumping combination that was not the most difficult for her. “It’s difficult to skate on your birthday,” Honored Coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova stated in the broadcast.
Realizing that there were not enough points for victory, Alexandra and Dmitry decided in the last seconds allotted for the elements to compensate for the gap with a quadruple throw. However, two attempts allowed by the rules were unsuccessful. Already out of the competition, Boykova and Kozlovsky again tried this risky element, but it never worked out purely.
“I wanted to do a quadruple throw at the competition on my birthday, but today it didn’t work out. I hope tomorrow (in the team tournament — ed.) it will work out,” Boykova said at a press conference. “We wanted to do the “rittberger-snipe” cascade in the finals. great snipe», and they told me to do it with a salchow. I probably didn’t readjust and did some bullshit. Okay, there’s still tomorrow. It’s cool that everything here is unpredictable.”
A little later, the captains of the teams that will compete in the jumping tournament on Sunday, Kozlovsky and Gallyamov, joined. It is clear that the skaters, whose confrontation has recently acquired the status of an epic, were asked a question on this topic. “I hope it doesn’t come to a fight,” Kozlovsky noted. “We have a very interesting rivalry, unique partners help us. We are already adults, with certain credentials, principled rivals. Such competitions should be built around such figures.”
The boys beat the adults. The second discipline of the tournament, unlike the first, was completely devoted to jumping — without twists and throws. In men's single skating, the jump, no matter how highly the gliding skill and other components of the second assessment are rated, is a fundamental element. The main intrigue was this: will the best adult skaters of the recent Russian championship in Chelyabinsk be able to cope with the onslaught of today's juniors?
The young people in our country are now so vigorous that this question is not at all rhetorical in nature. It was no coincidence that 14-year-old Arseny Fedotov won the qualification on Friday and received the first seeding number, while his peer Lev Lazarev became, to paraphrase tennis slang, the third skate of the tournament.
And the trend towards rejuvenation of ultra-c jumps not only in women’s figure skating, but also in men’s, was clearly evident already in the first round. Pyotr Gumennik, seeded number two, lost to another 14-year-old skater, Nikolai Kolesnikov. In the same quarterfinal, the silver medalist of the Russian Championship this season, Vladislav Dikidzhi, fell in competition with Lazarev. And finally, in the first round of the playoffs, Fedotov deprived last year’s winner of the jumping tournament, Grigory Fedorov, of the title, and in the semi-finals he declassed two-time Russian champion Evgeniy Semenenko.
It would be very symbolic if in the final, where three skaters qualified according to the regulations , three 14-year-old boys and would fight. But Fedotov and Lazarev reached the decisive round, but Kolesnikov still did not have enough strength in the semi-final match against 19-year-old Ivan Popov.
Well, in the final, Lazarev’s energy ran out — he was unable to impose the expected rivalry on Fedotov. Arseny, as if nothing had happened, performed two combinations with a quadruple Lutz, after which he performed this jump solo and added a quadruple flip. As they say, victory is a clear advantage.
“For me, the main thing was to do my part, everything worked out. When the semi-final ended, I immediately thought in my head that I would jump in the final. I didn’t expect that I would go so far. The older guys all congratulated me,” Fedotov clearly saved his emotions at the press conference , which he will still need in the team tournament on Sunday. It is noteworthy that Kozlovsky, the captain of one of the teams, was present in the hall at that moment. Under his gaze, Fedotov and Lazarev were embarrassed to answer the journalists’ question about who they would like to join on the team.
The cherry on the cake is a cascade with two quadruples. The Russian Women's Jumping Championship, naturally, became a jumping tournament for girls. This trend is far from new, and perhaps only Elizaveta Tuktamysheva could have broken it, but she missed the first half of the season and eventually entered the team tournament. After the regulations were published, it became clear that in the individual tournament the tone would be set by juniors who were simply doing quadruple jumps playfully. And for the matured Kamila Valieva, for whatever reason she actually withdrew a few days before the start of the competition, it would have been completely impossible to defend last year’s champion title.
In qualifying, the best result was shown by the winner of the adult Russian championship this season, Adelia Petrosyan, and she did it as stylishly as possible — on the very first attempt she performed a quadruple flip and a sheepskin coat, one of them with a cascade, after which she bowed with dignity and finished her performance. I didn't try again.
But in the main tournament, Adelia could no longer have an easy road to victory. Here it was necessary to do cascades of both three and five jumps, and there were no breaks planned between rounds; accordingly, the topic of physical readiness arose. And in terms of endurance, 12-year-old Margarita Bazylyuk and Elena Kostyleva, who are famous in children's figure skating for their effortless performance of ultra-c elements, could have some advantage over 16-year-old Petrosyan, although she looks almost as petite.
It was these skaters who reached the finals of the jumping tournament. The assumption that Petrosyan would look the most tired among them was confirmed — she failed to perfectly perform two multi-jump cascades and two solo jumps. But Kostyleva also spent a lot of energy on the way to the final, perhaps because of this the skater fell very unsuccessfully from a quadruple Salchow, painfully hitting her thigh. Tears even flowed from the eyes of the young athlete, but she dealt with them and made several more attempts, including successful ones. However, Petrosyan Kostyleva lost.
Bazylyuk, who competed last, ultimately retained the maximum amount of energy. Within half a minute after the allotted two minutes, it became clear that she would become the new champion of Russia in jumping. And so it happened. After the end of the competition, the icing on the cake was a cascade of two quadruple Salchows through an oiler. No one has ever done this at a competition.
True, most likely, they won’t do it — such a combination of elements in a program is not very profitable to perform, since the risk is large, and the same points can be scored by jumping these quads separately. But the ovation from the audience, of course, became a well-deserved reward for Margarita. As well as the million rubles that all the winners received.
