Boris Johnson and Liz Truss called for Canada to be added to the military the Aucus alliance to «strengthen the West's collective defense» against threats from Russia and China.
Former prime ministers said Canada should be involved in the development of new military technologies, including hypersonic missiles and submarines. drones.
The Aukus Alliance is a partnership between the UK, US and Australia and is focused on developing a new nuclear submarine for Australia to counter China's growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Mr Johnson, who participated in the negotiations to create the alliance, said Canada is «the most obvious next candidate» because it has «fought—often heroically—for freedom.»
< p>A new paper from the Legatum Institute argues that Canada should be added to Aukus because its supplies of critical mineral resources will allow the US, UK and Australia to become less dependent on Chinese exports.
The think tank said Canada should be added to the alliance's «Pillar II,» which promotes cooperation among member states on technology, artificial intelligence and new weapons.
Canada is already a member of NORAD, a defense partnership with the United States States, which provides advance warning of nuclear missile attacks and spy balloons aimed at North America.
This newspaper is also supported by the former Prime Minister of Australia. Tony Abbott argues that Canada should be allowed to join the alliance and gain access to military secrets in exchange for allowing other member states duty-free access to its mineral resources.
Canada «is the most obvious candidate to join.» '
“Deeper integration of science, technology and industrial capabilities will produce the fastest and most dramatic results, with some concrete targets already visible, such as hypersonic missiles and underwater drones,” Mr Johnson said.< /p>
«It's time to go further and bring other countries into this partnership — and the most obvious next candidate should be Canada.
» Canada is not just the core of the Commonwealth and the G7. For more than a century, Canadians have fought—often heroically—for freedom.
“No country embodies the values that make Aucus possible—and Canada has a wealth of opportunity to offer.”
>Ms Truss echoed Mr Johnson's call, saying Britain should «work closely with long-standing allies to thwart the hostile ambitions of authoritarian regimes.»
She said: «Including Canada in the Aucus family would be timely step.» a strategic step to strengthen the collective defense of the West.»
Supporters of the Aucus alliance argue that Britain was only able to negotiate its own international and security treaties thanks to Johnson's Brexit deal, which did not bind Britain into a pan-European politics.
The creation of the alliance caused a major diplomatic row between Australia and France, which had previously signed a contract to build a nuclear submarine.
France recalled its ambassador to Australia after the country struck a new deal with the US and UK, forcing the cancellation of a €56 billion deal with French manufacturer Naval Group, with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian describing the partnership as a «stab in the back».
