Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev lost for the third time in the decisive Australian Open match. Despite winning the first two sets, our athlete still lost to the Italian Jannik Sinner on the court in Melbourne. Sports tells how the sports world reacted to the comeback in the final of the first Grand Slam tournament in 2024.
For Medvedev, a Sunday defeat became fifth in the final of the Grand Slam tournament. And for the third time, the Muscovite narrowly falls short of the Australian Open trophy:
- 2021/Defeat Serb Novak Djokovic, almost no chance for Daniil — 5:7, 2:6, 2:6;
- 2022/In the dramatic AO final, Spaniard Rafael Nadal lost 0-2 in sets and almost slipped to 2:4 on his serve, but did not give up. The meeting exceeded the duration mark of five hours… And remained behind the Roland Garros record holder — 6:2, 7:6, 4:6, 4:6, 5:7.
The meeting with Sinner is almost a carbon copy of the confrontation with Nadal two years ago. In this match against Daniil, fatigue played a role: Medvedev led with a score of 2-0 (both sets 6:3), and then a turning point occurred — Sinner transformed before our eyes in the remaining three sets (4:6, 4:6, 3:6 ) pulled out the almost lost finale. That makes the victory sweeter for the Italian (the first AO triumph in the country’s history in singles), and the defeat of the 27-year-old Russian is only more bitter.
Immediately after the match, Medvedev warmly hugged his 22-year-old opponent and admitted that Sinner deserved the main victory of his career that evening:
«»I want to congratulate Yannick, today he proved again that he deserves it. He fought until the end, raised his level of play. We had many tournaments, many finals. This may not be your last Grand Slam title. But I hope that I I can win the next final if you play in it, because you won three finals in a row or so… It was an amazing two weeks. Losing in the final always hurts, but playing in the final is still better than losing before. I I always want to win, but I have to try even harder.”
At the press conference, Daniil noted that during the tournament he was seriously tired physically and that the representative of Italy was the first who was able to take advantage of this. After all, in the semi-finals Medvedev went through a real storm, in which, although he lost to the German Alexander Zverev with a score of 0-2, he still came out of it with a ticket to the final.
Sinner also did not skimp on compliments in opponent's address:
«
"Congratulations to Daniil and his team on an amazing tournament. You and I have played so many finals, and in every match I find something I can improve on. You make me a better player. You fought amazingly throughout the tournament and spent so many hours on the court. And today he ran after every ball — that’s impressive. I hope you can still lift this trophy. I’m sure you can do it.”
Immediately after the drama in Melbourne, Novak Djokovic, the world number one, addressed the final participants. Here's what the Serbian wrote on social networks:
“»Daniil made a great effort. Today was unlucky, but you played an incredible tournament. Bravo, Yannick! Well deserved. Congratulations to your family and team.»
Olympic champion Elena Vesnina, in a conversation with, like Djokovic, admired Sinner. At the same time, the three-time winner of the Grand Slam tournaments in doubles expressed hope that Medvedev will be able to reverse the unfortunate trend in the AO:
«We were very worried about Danya. Of course, it was a shame, but the incredibly gifted Sinner played against him, who was able to stop Djokovic himself in the semi-finals. It seemed that Danya had an advantage at the beginning, but from the way Yannick played over five sets it was clear that he kept adding. It's a shame that in the fourth set Dani had a chance to break, but he didn't take advantage of it. After that, Yannick was unstoppable. Such power, speed. In fact, he is the most talented tennis player of his age. A phenomenon on the men's tennis tour . I think Danya will be able to reverse this trend and sooner or later will win this tournament. I don’t remember the Russians reaching the Grand Slam finals so consistently. And he lost in the finals only to the greatest: Nadal and Djokovic. An amazing tennis player, he is always very interesting to watch «.
Carlos Alcaraz, the second racket of the world, also paid tribute to Sinner.
«
"I'm so happy for you, Yannick! You deserve this more than anyone! Enjoy the moment, my friend!' — the Spaniard wrote on social networks.
The vice-president of the Russian Tennis Federation (RFF) Alexey Selivanenko, despite Medvedev’s defeat, was also delighted with the final:
“
"That’s it, Those who watched this final received incredible pleasure from five sets of fantastic tennis at ultra-high speeds. I must say that Daniil played great in the first two sets, but Yannick played the rest fantastically. An absolutely deserved victory.» ()
The chairman of the board of the St. Petersburg football club “Zenith” Alexander Medvedev also spoke about the most important game of his namesake. In a conversation with an agency correspondent, he noted the problem with stamina that the domestic tennis player showed up after the end of the match: Daniil showed a super game in the first two sets and deservedly took the lead 2:0. Unfortunately, we failed to convert break points in the third set, and then we started to run out of gas — the consequences of protracted matches. We’re still proud of Daniel!”.
