The key difference between the second season of the Challenge Award is the expansion of the number of nominations. This year the international nomination “Discovery” appears. The traditional nominations are also retained: “Perspective” — for a scientific achievement that influenced the dynamics of the development of future technologies (awarded to scientists who were under 35 years old at the time of submitting the application); “Scientist of the Year” — for total personal contribution that has changed the landscape of science and technology; “Engineering Solution” — for an important invention or creation of a new technology; “Breakthrough” — for scientific research that has solved an important scientific or technological problem. The total prize fund of the Challenge Prize 2024 is 50 million rubles, 10 million rubles each. in each of the five nominations.
Deputy Chairman of the Board of Gazprombank Dmitry Sauers commented on why it is important for business to support fundamental scientific discoveries: “The Challenge Prize is an example of a completely new relationship between big science and big business. Often such interaction is based on quick results and quick benefits. Our mission is to support fundamental science, to find today the technologies of the future that will become our everyday life in the next 10-20 years.”
“This year we made an important decision. In fact, we have abolished any boundaries for our bonus. Now we are open to absolutely the whole world. It doesn’t matter to us what kind of passport a scientist has or what language he speaks. We stand for an open and honest international dialogue in science, built on the principles of trust and cooperation,” said Leonid Shlyakhover, president of the Foundation for the Development of Scientific and Cultural Relations “Challenge.”
The chairman of the scientific committee of the prize, Artem Oganov, emphasized that any scientist can apply for the prize, regardless of citizenship and country of residence. And the scientific committee of the prize guarantees the impartiality and objectivity of the assessment.
Last year, 218 applications were submitted to the competition for the prize. The greatest interest was shown by scientists from Moscow and the Moscow region, St. Petersburg, the Republic of Tatarstan, Krasnodar Territory, Novosibirsk, Sverdlovsk and Saratov regions. The organizers expect that in the new season the geography of the competition participants will expand and the number of submitted applications will increase.
