Alexander Ovechkin is the best Russian sniper in the history of the regular championships of the National Hockey League (NHL). In 2004, he was selected first overall in the draft by the Washington Capitals. In his debut season, the Russian scored 52 goals and since then has won the Maurice Richard Trophy, the prize for the best sniper of the championship, nine times.
On December 14, 2022, Ovechkin scored a hat-trick in a match against the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring his 798th, 799th and 800th career goals. The Russian became the third hockey player in the history of the NHL to reach the eight hundred goal mark. In a match with the Winnipeg Jets on December 24, he scored a double and moved into clear second place in the list of the best snipers in the league, ahead of the legendary Canadian Gordie Howe, who scored a total of 801 goals with the Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers.
