Design studio BorromeodeSilva from Milan presented its next automotive masterpiece — a restomod Ford Mustang STL-1, the idea of which was the founder of the studio, Carlo Borromeo gestated for 15 years.
Our regular readers are familiar with Carlo Borromeo and the BorromeodeSilva studio he founded in 2010 from such outstanding restomods as the Nardone Porsche 928 and Lancia Delta Futurista. Borromeo also designed the Lamborghini Diablo restomod for Eccentrica Cars. In general, he knows how to handle automotive classics and use modern technology to bring their aesthetics to perfection.

The Ford Mustang STL-1 is BorromeodeSilva's first in-house restomod, and not made for a client company; it will be produced in a limited edition. The idea for this restomod came to Carlo Borromeo in 2008 during his big trip across America from New York to Buenos Aires in a classic 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback coupe. The result was a very impressive all-terrain restomod in the style of Baja — this is the name of the series of off-road racing across the steppes and deserts, famous in the USA and Mexico. Baja racing cars typically feature stripped and reinforced bodywork, armor-piercing suspension, and high-profile knobbly tires—all attributes found on the Ford Mustang STL-1.

To build a restomod, you need an original 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback, from which only the skeleton of the body will remain, and even that, cut and reinforced. The upper part of the body is cut off and replaced with a spatial tubular frame that follows the profile of the original fastback. The restomod does not have a hard roof; for bad weather, only a light fabric cape is provided, which needs to be pulled over the frame. All exterior body panels of the restomod are new, made of thicker steel than the original model.

In the interior of the restomod, nothing remains of the donor car, but the original style and shape of the front panel are preserved, the front custom seats do not have headrests, and the sweeping speedometer on the instrument panel will evoke nostalgia among owners of early Zhiguli cars. Carbon fiber and polished aluminum are widely used in finishing.
Under the hood is a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated Coyote V8, borrowed from the Ford Mustang Boss 302 of the early 2010s and supplemented with 302R race-spec components that allow it to rev up to 7,400 rpm. Engine output is not disclosed, but it should be slightly higher than the original V8 from the Ford Mustang Boss 302, which produced 450 hp. and 515 Nm. The automatic transmission sends all power to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential. A custom exhaust manifold with reduced resistance is responsible for the thoroughbred exhaust sound.

The suspension is completely new, adapted for fast driving on rough terrain and dirt roads. Inside the vintage-looking wheels, modern ventilated perforated disc brakes are installed, the diameter of the front discs is 300 mm, the rear discs are 268 mm.
BorromeodeSilva does not disclose the circulation and price of the Ford Mustang STL-1, but if judging by other restomods in which Carlo Borromeo took part, the future owners of this wonderful Baja Mustang need to prepare at least half a million euros.
