VELIKY NOVGOROD, April 16The court postponed the consideration of the criminal case against the wife of the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta — Europe* Kirill Martynov** Antonina until May 2, defendant must undergo a psychological and psychiatric examination, the correspondent reports.
The Novgorod Regional Court on Tuesday resumed consideration of the criminal case against Martynova, who has been accused since 2007 of attempted murder of her two-year-old daughter. Since July 2008, she has been on the federal wanted list. At the end of March 2024, she was detained. All this time she was hiding with her daughter Alisa Fedorova in the Stavropol Territory.

According to investigators, in February 2007, Martynova threw her daughter down a flight of stairs in a multi-story building. As a result, the girl was injured. In July 2008, a jury found Martynova guilty. The woman then said it was an accident.

Prosecutor Nikolai Zhukov insisted on Tuesday on conducting a psychological and psychiatric examination at the Novgorod Clinical Specialized Center for Psychiatry, despite the fact that such an examination was carried out in 2007 and did not reveal any diseases in the defendant.
““In order to more thoroughly study the defendant’s personality and determine her state of health… pose the question to the experts: does Martynova currently suffer from any chronic mental disorder… can she understand the social danger of her actions,” noted Zhukov.
The defenders of 39-year-old Martynova and her 19-year-old daughter supported the petition. They also added that they need at least two weeks to familiarize themselves with the case. As a result, the judge granted the prosecutor's request to conduct an examination and postponed the court hearing until May 2.

The incident was witnessed by an 11-year-old boy who claimed that he saw the defendant abandon the child. In July 2008, a jury found Martynova guilty.
