The electric car brand of the Chinese state-owned automaker GAC presented the second-generation Aion V crossover at the Beijing Motor Show — it was developed as a global model and should compensate a sharp weakening of the position of the Aion brand in the home market.
GAC launched the Aion brand in 2018, its first-born — the Aion S sedan — was put into production in April 2019, then several crossovers, including the Aion V. Sales of Aion in China grew steadily until the fall of last year, and then, against the backdrop of a price war between electric train manufacturers, they went down sharply. At the end of the first quarter of this year, Aion, according to CAAM, sold 65,003 cars in China, which is 19.1% less than sales in January-March 2023.
In 2022, Aion launched a premium wing with the Hyper prefix, which in 2023 became a separate brand. There are no models from the Hyper line on the Aion Chinese consumer website, but they are still included in Aion sales statistics. Aion is trying to compensate for its weakening position in China by entering foreign markets: in September last year, the brand launched in Thailand with the right-hand drive Aion Y Plus crossover and is building a plant here. The second-generation Aion V crossover on the new modular AEP platform was initially developed with an eye to the global market.
The first generation Aion V entered the home market in 2020; already in 2021 it had an upgraded version, Aion V Plus, which remains in production. It is curious that the Mitsubishi Airtrek crossover was made for the Chinese market based on the Aion V, but it did not achieve success; last fall, Mitsubishi Motors decided to leave the Chinese market.
If the “first” Aion V has an almost single-volume profile and looks like a crossover, the second generation crossover has much more traditional proportions and a more masculine appearance. At the same time, the wheelbase with the change of generations decreased from 2830 to 2775 mm, the overall length decreased from 4650 to 4605 mm (compared to the Aion V Plus).

The equipment includes a rich arsenal of electronic driver assistants; in promotional pictures a lidar is visible above the windshield of the second generation Aion V.

The Aion brand has not yet been officially presented in Russia, but since it is aimed at foreign markets, then perhaps the GAC management will want to launch it in our country, although, to be honest, it has more chances premium brand Hyper.
