The young luxury brand Yangwang, owned by BYD, continues to expand its model line: the previously announced hardcore version of Off is presented at the Beijing Motor Show -road Master Edition of the hybrid frame SUV Yangwang U8 and the large and very powerful electric sedan Yangwang U7 is shown live for the first time.
BYD launched the Yangwang luxury brand in November 2022; its name, translated from romanized Chinese into Russian, means “look up” and emphasizes Yangwang’s highest status in the hierarchy of BYD’s subsidiary brands. The first Yangwang model was the large frame SUV U8, it entered the market last fall and is selling quite well considering the draconian price tag of 1,098,000 yuan (13.9 million rubles in translation at the current exchange rate): in the first quarter of 2024, according to CAAM, 3522 copies of this model were sold in China.

Yangwang U8 version designed for heavy off-road use, was announced last year during the premiere of this model, and at the Beijing Auto Show it was shown live and put on sale with the same price tag of 1,098,000 yuan as the standard version.

Features of the Off-road Master Edition include a snorkel, which allows increasing the fording depth from 1000 to 1400 mm, “toothy” tires on 20-inch wheels (the standard version has 22-inch ones), an additional roof rack, an optional reconnaissance quadcopter for terrain inspection, satellite communication systems and night vision. The equipment is slightly simplified compared to the standard version: for example, there is no sunroof, monitors for rear passengers and some of the on-road electronic driver assistants.
Yangwang U8 Off-road Master Edition
The power plant of the Yangwang U8 Off-road Master Edition is standard, plug-in hybrid, range extender type: 2.0-liter gasoline turbo engine with 272 hp. is not mechanically connected to the wheels, but operates in generator mode and charges a battery with a capacity of 49.05 kWh, which powers four traction electric motors (one for each wheel), their maximum combined output is 1197 hp. and 1280 Nm. Due to more aggressive tires, the Yangwang U8 Off-road Master Edition has a shorter range compared to the standard version: the electric range has decreased from 180 to 120 km in the CLTC cycle, in hybrid mode the range has shrunk from 1000 up to 780 km (fuel tank capacity — 75 l). Acceleration time to 100 km/h increased from 3.6 to 3.9 s, top speed decreased from 200 to 190 km/h.

The overall length of the Yangwang U8 Off-road Master Edition is 5325 mm, width — 2095 mm, height — 1940 mm, wheelbase — 3050 mm, ground clearance in the standard position of the adjustable air suspension — 285 mm, approach angle — 37.5 degrees, departure angle — 38 degrees, ramp angle — 26.5 degrees. Curb weight — 3490 kg, permissible towed trailer weight — 2.5 tons.
Yangwang U8 Off- road Master Edition, Yangwang U7 and Yangwang U9
The second Yangwang model was the four-motor electric supercar U9 with 1,306 hp, which went on sale in February, and the third in the range will be the large U7 sedan with a powertrain borrowed from the supercar. The first public display of the Yangwang U7 took place at the Beijing Motor Show, but its full premiere is still ahead — at the exhibition the sedan was displayed behind a fence with closed doors and tightly tinted windows; it is not yet possible to look into the interior.

Since Yangwang U7 has already appeared in the electronic database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry, then some of its technical characteristics are already known: overall length — 5265 mm, width — 1998 mm, height — 1517 mm, wheelbase — 3160 mm. The aerodynamic drag coefficient cx of the body is only 0.195. Curb weight — 3095 kg. From the Yangwang U9 supercar, the sedan borrowed not only a four-engine power plant with a maximum total output of 1306 hp. and 1680 Nm, but also active electrohydraulic suspension. A fully charged battery with a capacity of 135.5 kWh should be enough for approximately 800 km of CLTC cycle. Other details will become known after the premiere; Yangwang U7 should enter the market this year.
