They contain toxic chemicals that can cause cancer
A new study has found that the bandages we all use contain carcinogenic toxics that are thought to last “forever” . Phthalates have received special attention from scientists in recent years — these toxic substances are believed to cause a number of types of cancer. The study was conducted on 40 different patches from 18 brands. 65% of them contained hazardous chemicals.

The bandages we use to seal wounds to disinfect are actually hazardous to health: they contain toxic polyfluorinated substances, or PFAS, which are known as “phthalates.” — this was found in a study conducted by Mamavation and Environment and Health News, an organization that focuses on health research and environmental health. These «silent killers» can reduce immunity, cause dementia and some types of cancer.
The study looked at 40 different dressings from 18 brands, and 26 of them found high levels of phthalates, which have known negative health effects, including decreased immune system function, adverse reactions to vaccines, learning and development problems in infants and children, and decreased fertility. , endocrine disorders, obesity, certain types of cancer, etc. These chemicals can enter the bloodstream through open wounds, leading to various health problems.
Scientist emeritus and former director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Linda Birnbaum has expressed concern that patches applied to open wounds may lead to the development of PFAS in children and adults.
Phthalates are also known as «forever chemicals» because they are very resistant to degradation and can remain in the human body for many years. These synthetic chemicals are heat, grease, oil, stain and water resistant. They can be found in products such as adhesives, nonstick cookware, and food packaging. They can enter the bloodstream through consumption or direct contact. But why are they added to patches? According to Mamavation, most likely because they increase the water permeability of products.
Scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have already stated that phthalates are especially dangerous for boys: after contact with “eternal chemicals” they had health problems and symptoms of chronic anxiety. It doesn't work that way on girls.
According to one market expert, the published study was conducted only on American-made patches, so absolutely all adhesive patches cannot be said to contain phthalates. At least no one checked the Russian ones.
However, in recent years, there has been a growing body of research around the world that links reproductive health problems to exposure to toxic, endocrine-disrupting chemicals contained in cosmetic products. Among them are phthalates, phenols and parabens. Phthalates even penetrate the placenta and can affect the development of the fetus, as well as disrupt the normal development of pregnancy.
Recently, researchers at the Belarusian Institute of Radiobiology of the National Academy of Sciences discovered phthalates in toys, in various packaging, in plastic cards, carpets and wall coverings. In addition, they are often present in hoses, pipes, car upholstery, window frames, lubricants, detergents, nail polishes, shampoos, antiperspirants, and sunscreen cosmetics. Thus, Belarusian scientists note that stretch ceilings made from low-quality film with phthalates can become an “invisible killer.”
To reduce the impact of phthalates on the body, scientists advise using plastic containers less often and (from sin) do not get carried away with adhesive plasters, but if possible, use a bandage. Fortunately, scientists do not offer plantain leaf.
