Less than a month has passed since the start of sales in China, when pre-orders for the new HUAWEI Pura 70 line began in Russia – at its very top, the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra (Altra). The model has incorporated the best solutions of the P-series and received a lot of new things. We find out what the “flagship of flagships” is in the review.
Design
The P-series of HUAWEI smartphones has always stood out from its competitors in appearance – the designers were guided by the principles of minimalism, originality and clean lines. Pura abandoned the usual geometric motifs and introduced a spirit of innovation. The HUAWEI Pura 70 series opens a new chapter in the history of HUAWEI smartphones, inheriting the smart technology of mobile photography and the unique aesthetics of the P series smartphones.
The triangular design of the camera modules symbolizes forward movement. This element reflects new trends in smartphone design.
In general, the designers have prepared a lot of color solutions for the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra (Altra) – we received a brown version for testing. But no matter what color you choose, the backrest will be finished in eco-leather. This is a pleasant-to-touch material with a raised texture: a large smartphone lies securely in your hand. The manufacturer promises that eco-leather is durable and the smartphone will not lose its luster from daily use.
In embossed back panel, a star pattern can be discerned. The designers say they were inspired by the twinkling lights on the water at night. Overall, the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra looks like a premium device.
The new product has a very interesting front glass panel – it uses not the classic “waterfall” on the side edges, but four rounded sides of the screen. The glass itself is wear-resistant Kunlun Crystal Armor. It features scratch-resistant technology that uses amorphous diamond-like carbon with increased transparency. Out of the box, it comes with a high-quality protective film; you can never have too much protection.
Finally, the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra is protected from dust and moisture according to the IP68 class. Certification allows, for example, to take photos and videos with a smartphone underwater.
Camera
The photo and video capabilities of the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra are something that will be talked about in the smartphone market for a long time. The manufacturer gave the flagship an extremely interesting camera unit. The main one with a resolution of 50 megapixels uses an inch sensor with image stabilization with sensor shift and a retractable lens with a variable aperture of f/1.6-4.0. The manufacturer also thought about the reliability of the design – the lens was tested, withstanding 300,000 cycles. The camera also has a polymer layer made of liquid silicone, which closes the space when extending the lens and provides additional protection.
HUAWEI has tuned the pop-up mechanism with variable frequency to give the high-frequency sound a pleasant mechanical tone that imitates the sound of professional photography equipment. Moreover, the main sensor received support for XD Motion Engine technology: thanks to it, the camera is capable of taking clear pictures of objects moving at speeds of up to 300 km/h.

The second camera is a 50MP sensor that sits behind a periscope telephoto lens with optical image stabilization and 35x macro zoom. This sensor also performs a macro function, allowing you to get closer to an object at a distance of up to 5 cm in super macro mode with 35x magnification. “Shirik” is equipped with a 40 megapixel sensor, has autofocus and can also be used for macro photography. Lastly, the selfie camera uses a 13MP sensor with autofocus. There are three focal length modes – 0.6x, 0.8x and 1x.

The main camera allows you to take great photos during the day, with excellent edge-to-edge sharpness and even background blur. Enthusiasts will love the extremely fast shutter speed – the phone is capable of taking multiple images each time the shutter is pressed and then stitching the shots together to create an ultra-sharp image. Night photos also amaze with their detail, the night mode accurately highlights areas in the shadows and processes point light sources.

A sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens provides excellent image quality – the focusing and aperture of the lens allow you to obtain high-quality images that have virtually no “softness” at the edges of the frame inherent in wide angle lenses.

The manufacturer paid special attention to the flower color of the photographs. When developing the HUAWEI Pura 70 series, Huawei engineers selected specific shade ranges in different scenarios through mutual confirmation of theoretical analysis and human experiments. After restoring the natural color to the original version of the image, the hue intensity and color saturation are adaptively adjusted using three different filters: Vivid, Vivid and Monochrome.
HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra is capable of recording video in maximum quality 4K/60 fps, and switching to all sensors. What can I say, even the front camera can record videos in this mode.
Display
The smartphone screen even received a separate name – HUAWEI X-True Hi-Res. Technically, it is a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED with 1B color coverage, a resolution of 1260 x 2844 pixels, a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz and a peak brightness of up to 2500 nits.
The brightness of the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra is really not just a lot, but a lot a lot – the screen does not fade even in direct sunlight, the display content remains clearly visible.

LTPO technology assumes an adaptive matrix refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz. Indeed, the Pura 70 Ultra intelligently “approaches” this issue – for example, in the Always On Display mode (always on), the smartphone will output 1 Hz to save battery. And in a game where maximum picture smoothness is needed, 120 Hz.
The display uses high-frequency PWM ripple (1440 Hz) – in other words, the user will not encounter the effect of unpleasant screen flickering.
Productivity and communications
In Russia, the only version of the smartphone is available with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of permanent memory – for example, the RAM is made according to the LPDDR5X standard, which ensures ultra-fast system response.
HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra has a set of modern interfaces and communications – 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and a scattering of navigation standards. The infrared port for controlling household appliances has not been forgotten. Many will also appreciate the fast USB Type-C 3.1 port.
Pura 70 Ultra runs EMUI 14.2. The new version of the shell has received additional features. So, here is another update to the interactive interface. The system can capture the area where the user's gaze is directed in real time to create an enjoyable and dynamic user interaction with the interface using an interactive smartphone theme. You can choose from a variety of triangular shapes or colorful stickers and then layer them together to create a personalized and dynamic wallpaper.
HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra can recognize user gestures. There are many scenarios for using the AI-based function – for example, you can view videos and web pages with one wave of your hand, without touching the screen.
EMUI 14.2 pays close attention to the issue of security. The function of intelligent information hiding is tied to facial recognition – notification information will be displayed only if the owner is looking at the smartphone screen. If the system detects that someone other than the owner is looking at the screen, notification information will be automatically hidden. A dedicated protection center gives users an overview of the device's security status. In it you can check the current security status of the device or the functioning of the password storage.
Sound, security and autonomy
The sound quality of the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra stereo pair can be compared to a high-quality portable audio speaker – there is bass here, there is no dip in the mids, and high frequencies sound pleasant.
The fingerprint scanner here is an optical under-screen – fingerprint reading was fast and error-free. One can only find fault with its relatively low location, at the bottom frame of the screen.
And although the smartphone is thin (the body thickness is 8.4 mm), the battery capacity is 5200 mAh – the energy-efficient processor and optimization did their job. HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra can last more than one day on a single charge. HUAWEI SuperCharge wired charging with a power of 100 W allows you to charge the battery up to 40% in 15 minutes, and up to 70% in 30 minutes. Wireless charging, if you purchase a special unit, can charge the Pura 70 Ultra with a power of 80 W.
