Kommersant: a sergeant of the Russian Armed Forces was found guilty of the death of seven colleagues

The jury of a military court returned a guilty verdict in the criminal case of former platoon commander Sergeant Dmitry Lobovikov. The board considered it proven that the sergeant, while intoxicated, threw a grenade at his subordinates, the explosion of which detonated the gas cylinders. Kommersant writes about this.
According to the publication, the emergency occurred after the celebration of the old New Year. Non-combat losses amounted to seven killed and ten wounded.
The events that became the subject of the investigation occurred in a military unit withdrawn from the Northern Military District zone to the Belgorod region at the end of 2022, recalls Kommersant.
On the night of January 14, 2023, according to investigators, Sergeant Lobovikov decided to check the guards. He was dissatisfied with what he saw, returned to the barracks, woke up the soldiers and began to voice complaints. Then he took an RGD-5 grenade out of his pocket and pulled out the ring from it, offering to insert it in its place to one of the recruits. The soldier replied that he did not know how to do this.
Then the sergeant went out into the corridor, but after walking a few meters, he unexpectedly threw a grenade into the slightly open door of the next room, where soldiers from another platoon were sleeping.
< p>The explosion caused the gas cylinders in the room to detonate. Seven servicemen died from shrapnel and fire and about ten received injuries and burns of varying severity.
The defendant was unanimously found guilty of all the crimes charged against him and not deserving of leniency.
According to the publication , a discussion of the consequences of the verdict, at which state prosecutors will have to request punishment for the sergeant, will take place on May 21. The accused faces life imprisonment.
