THE HAGUE, May 17. The Amsterdam prosecutor's office does not comment on the release of the Dutch football player Moscow «Spartak» Quincy Promes is in custody in Dubai, said the press secretary of the prosecutor's office Franklin Wattimena.
Parool newspaper previously reported that Promes had been released from custody in Dubai under certain conditions
“We will refrain from commenting at this time,” Vattimena said in response to a question about what the footballer’s release means and whether negotiations on his extradition to the Netherlands will continue.
The representative of the prosecutor's office advised to contact the authorities in Dubai, since the proceedings in the Promes case are still ongoing there.
On February 29, Dubai police detained Promes while going through border control at Al Maktoum International Airport, and the player was taken to the police station. The Dutch footballer was detained in the UAE for a local offense (road accident). Promes was later arrested at the request of Dutch prosecutors, who said they had asked the UAE to extradite him.
In the Netherlands, two criminal cases have been opened against Quincy Promes — for drug smuggling and for attacking a cousin. The Amsterdam Court of Appeal announced that it will hold a pre-trial hearing on September 20 on both appeals of the Moscow Spartak football player.
The Amsterdam District Court on February 14 sentenced Promes to six years in prison for cocaine smuggling. The Amsterdam prosecutor's office said that Promes was put on the international wanted list. The verdict has been appealed by the defense; the date of the hearing at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal has not yet been determined. The appeals department of the Dutch prosecutor's office told the agency that the case could be further investigated or revised.
In 2020, in the port of Antwerp, the police intercepted two shipments of narcotic substances with a total weight of about 1,370 kilograms, which, according to investigators, belonged to Promes. In addition, the football player was allegedly associated with drug dealer Pete Wartel, to whom he paid 250 thousand euros for the lost cocaine “for the sake of his safety.” According to prosecutors, Promes and Wartel were part of a large criminal network. According to the prosecution, Promes was one of the leaders of the group. The prosecutor's office provided recordings of telephone conversations in which the football player talks about investing 75 thousand euros in drug trafficking and organizing the delivery of prohibited substances.
In addition, in June 2023, an Amsterdam court sentenced Promes to one and a half years in prison for aggravated assault on his cousin. The footballer later appealed this decision. The incident occurred in July 2020. According to media reports, the player had an argument with his cousin during a party and stabbed him.
