MOSCOW, May 21. Last year, Russian courts began arresting accused and suspects less frequently, and are increasingly assigning forced labor instead of a colony, said the Chairman of the Supreme Court Russian Federation Irina Podnosova.
«In 2023, the courts granted 5.9% fewer petitions to select a preventive measure in the form of detention than in the previous year. 11% fewer petitions to extend the preventive measure were granted,» she said at a plenary meeting of the Council judges.
< br />According to Podnosova, courts of appeal and cassation overturned convictions against 11 thousand people, and commuted their sentences for another 18 thousand convicts.
“Courts began to more actively use punishment in the form of forced labor as an alternative; they were prescribed 5 times more often than in the previous year,” noted the chairman of the RF Supreme Court who recently took this post.
