Russian scientists have developed a digital twin for controlling quantum systems

Under the leadership of the head of the scientific group of the Russian Quantum Center and the director of the Institute of Physics and Quantum Engineering of MISIS University Alexey Fedorov, who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Challenge Prize, Russian physicists have created a digital twin based on tensor systems . The results of the study were published in the journal Physical Review Research.

With the development of computing devices, increasingly complex tasks appear, for which it is necessary to create even more advanced and powerful tools. Quantum computers are actively used to solve problems with a large number of parameters (such as modeling large molecules or chemical reactions), but, unfortunately, their capabilities are limited. The synergy of machine learning methods and quantum technologies, which Alexey Fedorov’s research group is working on, will allow solving a wider range of problems and will be a more universal and efficient computing tool.

“The construction of increasingly complex quantum devices requires the development of effective methods for controlling them – this is becoming one of the central tasks of quantum technologies. This direction is especially relevant for the development of quantum computers and quantum simulators. Our group at the RQC and MISIS, as well as our colleagues at the Lebedev Physical Institute, participating in the development of quantum computers within the framework of the “road map” under the coordination of Rosatom, are actively involved in the development of methods for controlling quantum systems that will make it possible to effectively use their capabilities to solve prototypes of applied tasks,” commented Alexey Fedorov.

Developments in the field of quantum technologies can affect the landscape of modern science and the life of every person. So, in 2023, the head of the scientific group of the RCC, a researcher at the Physical Institute named after. P. N. Lebedev RAS Ilya Semerikov received the National Prize in the field of future technologies “Challenge” for the creation of an ion quantum processor using multi-level quantum systems – qudits – and demonstration of quantum algorithms.
